OT: Updating my Motherboard BIOS??

by PHendrix » Sun, 29 Apr 2001 10:37:43

Ok, I've tried everything I can, to get N4 to run on my system.  But even with
the patch I still get the complete lock up of my system, where I have to remove
the power to reboot my PC.  Anyway, it seems my last resort is to flash update
my motherboard.

Could anyone, point me to some detailed instructions on how to do it, and let
me know the risks??

Thanks guys

Try one of these news groups for help/info. Also check your motherboard
manufacturer's site for the necessary utilities etc.

alt.comp.periphs.mainboard.abit
alt.comp.periphs.mainboard
comp.sys.ibm.pc.hardware.chips
alt.comp.hardware.overclocking
alt.comp.hardware.homebuilt
alt.comp.hardware.pc-homebuilt

It can be risky but it's not very hard to do. So make sure you get all the
instruction you can before doing anything.

Good luck

That sounds like a rather desperate measure considering if it goes wrong
then your mobo becomes unusable . Tell us what your specs are first
including drivers used .

I doubt that is the problem, but it is possible. List your system
specs and directx version. Your motherboard manufacturer should have
very detailed instructions for how to flash a new bios. Depends on
what bios you have, AMI and Award are slightly different. I just
upgraded my bios last night so could list the instructions, but I'm
using Award and you may be using AMI or Phoenix so need more info.

Never heard of that motherboard. What bios is it using? Ami, Award? Do
you have directx8 installed? Latest vid drivers?

ATI drivers.

Thanks

Well, to flash the bios you basically make a boot floppy by rebooting
to dos, put floppy in drive and type format a: /s/u
The you put the flash program on the floppy and the updated bios (bin
file for Award bios). Then you would type name of flash prog space and
bin file name. Then follow instructions on screen carefully. But, and
I emphasize this, go find your motherboards website and follow their
specific instructions exactly. Maybe you have soemthing set too
aggressive in the bios. That can cause instability problems, ram
timings and clock cycles can be a culprit, so can haveing video bios
shadow on. Don't shadow anything in the bios. Set ram CAS to 3 and see
if that helps.
