OT - need recommendations for new source of newsgroups

by will » Wed, 16 May 2001 02:16:20

Just went from dial up to cable and love the speed. But a big problem now-
the cable isp has really bad usenet service (the dial up was great for
this).  I don't receive many posts or replies and it's getting frustrating.
The messages I do get are usually followups to an original message I never
got. Complaints to the ISP aren't effective.

Any advice on a good web-based or alternative source of news?  Now that
deja/google only have news reading without replying that's not an option.

of course, I realize that the post with the perfect solution probably won't
make it back to me :(

here's hoping for the best

service at least as good as a couple of pay services I've used--which means
that it's very, very good.  I don't understand why you're having problems

If you don't mind paying, I've had good service from www.newsguy.com.  They
have several different levels of service available and keep posts for ages
compared to most others.

I have no idea why, but believe me it's happening.  I'm getting many
messages on this forum and others which are followups to previous posts
which I never received.  Lots of "Re: blah blah blah" with original quotes
taken from a post which I never got.  A good example of this is the "Montoya
Hype" thread, where I'm getting a lot of replies by David Fisher to posts I
never got.  He's answered Gregor Veble, Andre Warringa, ymenard, and Gerry
Aitken - none of whose original posts I've received.  Imagine my
predicament- it's as though ras has become the David Fisher forum. :-)

Thanks - I might give it a try if the price is right, but it seems

been a mixed bag in my experience- sometimes great service and techs,
sometimes *incredibly bad*.  The problems of a large company I guess.

Giganews works pretty well for me, I think it's www.giganews.com
Good bandwidth for download speeds, but you pay based on the amount of
bandwidth you use a month, so look at the plans carefully.

Thanks- I do have a lot of newsgroups to choose from, it's just that not all
the messages are coming through.  For example, I'm up to 5 responses in the
"Montoya Hype" thread from David Fisher without a sign of the post that he's
responding to.

Why would it download some posts but not others?  That's the question.  Only

blows?  So far I've seen 2 people who seem to have no problems with it, but
their results are obviously different than mine.

You don't unknowingly have filters of some type enabled do you?

You might want to reset your newsgroups and make sure you aren't filtering
anybody.  Also, check to make sure that you're downloading all the available
current messages.  You might not be downloading all the headers.

your account and also maybe you mihght have to delete all & restart? I
havent done this is so long I forget but someone can help you here!
Btw: I've had 2533 posts from RAS in the past 5 days.. Hope this will
help a little?

Many ISP (especially ones that cover wide areas) have several mirror
news server located in different places. However if the bandwidth
is not sufficient they might be not completely mirrored. You may try
to ask your ISP if that's the case and ask them for address of their
other news servers. If ISP support won't help, ask somebody who
has no problems with the same ISP what is the address/IP of the news
server they use. I had similar problems a while ago and have cured
it by switching to another mirror server.

Good luck,

everything was fine. Now I too am getting about 50-60% of the posts.
Agent will report "getting up to 200 message headers", and then it may
only actually retrieve 140 or so. Even worse in the binary areas where
if you miss 1 part your file is worthless.

Here is one that you can subsribe to but there are no binaries groups
available:

Thanks for the help everyone. Yep, using OE which always worked fine before.
Changed the settings to the new account and all and it works... kinda (as
I've described). I get a few messages but nowhere near the 2533 you've
gotten in the last 5 days. I'd be hard pressed to put a number on it but
surely less than a hundred or so per day in ras (and that's probably being
generous).  I don't have anyone killfiled (never have either) and checked it
to be sure (thanks for the idea, chainbreaker!).  I've got it set to
download 1000 headers at once, so it's not like there's an artificially low
number of post headers being downloaded.  And I've tried clicking the
'download next 1000 headers' too with no luck.

I'll try deleting the news server from OE and then reconfiguring it.  If
that doesn't work I'll just try using another news reader other than OE.
Might get lucky and get around the problem.  Can't think of much else to do.

thanks again for the advice. this is really frustrating.  if this doesnt fix
it I guess I'll try out one of the pay servers.
