Worst racing demo ever?

I just had the misfortune to try the demo of Outlaw Racers from
3dgamers.com . It has to rank as the worst graphics, worst physics and
worst AI ever found in a racing game I have ever played. Are there any
worse than this? It is kind of worth playing if you are feeling jaded
with *** as it shows you what is good about the games you play.

Did "Spirit of Speed" have a demo ? Whatever, it was a hideous effort .

Do you remember the GPL demo?  God, that was like watching a slideshow on my
P2 266 even with a Voodoo2 card.  I thought that game had NO chance of ever
running on my computer.  But the actual game was a lot better than the
demo...

It was good enough for me to get a Rendition card. The first & only time I
ever bought a piece of hardware specifically for a demo.

Don't think it belongs in this thread :)

The GPL demo ran well for me after I used the various patches for the full
sim.  I was close to giving up on this famous GPL thing that everybody raved
about, but thought "what the hell, patching it might work..."  Thank
goodness I tried that. :)

That's odd - I had about the same setup and remember the GPL demo running
fair enough, as did the full game when it arrived.  You had to drop some eye
candy and run it at about 800X600, but it would hit 36fps most of the time.
I'd gotten the Voodoo2 for whatever the original Ubisoft F1 effort was
(can't even recall it), but once I got a look at GPL it was game over.  But
really - worst racing demo ever?  Hell; I wonder if we'll ever see the sim
bar raised that much in one shot again.  I doubt it, but would love to be
wrong.

Running against a full field of AI would of course kill the FPS in the

honkin' Voodoo 3 to sort that out... ;-)

Perhaps before this gets out of hand, I should clarify my statement.  "Worst
racing demo ever?"  Well, no, I guess not.  But I'd been following the brief
announcements that Sierra would make from long before the demo was released
and I was so e***d when the demo finally came out that I was quite
disappointed by how the demo actually ran.  Once the whole game arrived it
worked well (though with graphics turned down) on my machine - but the demo
didn't give me a lot of hope at the time.  Since then I've firmly accepted
the 'spend money to make GPL run better' idea.

I find myself periodically thinking about the frustrations I had with the
demo as I pick the remnents of my car out of another set of haybales.  So,
worst demo ever?  Nah, just frustrating at the time.  Best transition from
demo to actual product?  Maybe that's closer to what I'm getting at...

I raced the demo with no problem very finely at 30+ fps on my P2 266 and
Voodoo 2 card.  You just had to take off some graphical details.

It was very smooth.

Okay, with this being the 2nd post to the same effect (along with Steve B's
post), I'm willing to say that perhaps there was something wrong with my
specific machine, but in my case turning down/off all the graphics details
made NO difference on the FPS in the GPL demo.  Whatever.  It doesn't matter
at all as the actual game ran much better.  I'm glad that you were able to
enjoy it from the demo days on - I had to wait until I was able to buy the
actual game.  Now, having pulled us off onto a tangent, perhaps we can get
back to spamtraps original question of "Worst Racing Demo Ever"...

CMR3 was pretty bad (enough so that I won't buy the game).  I wasted a fair
bit of time trying to find out what was wrong with my controller or the
settings until I read about the centre-pivot physics.

At least the CMR3 demo ran after I'd switched to WinXP (still sucked worse
in sim terms than CMR1, but that's beside the point), unlike the Race Driver
demo, which still crashes on going to track.

No it wasn't.  Well, it was certainly not a good game or demo but the
graphics and atmosphere were, at the time, second to none.  I've seen
plenty of worse efforts out there...

Indeed - much more fun as a topic anyway.  But there have been so many ***
demos; how to pick THE one?  If we go by ratio of download size to time on
the HD before deleting, then GP4 wins by a landslide.  But I usually pick
the upchuck factor, since feeling ill is far more unpleasant than just being
disappointed with game features.  Seems I'm hyper-sensitive to stuff
happening with the car that my brain tells me shouldn't be, so I get
nauseated easily.  Just like riding in the car with my sis driving; gas,
brake, gas, brake - all on a straight road with no traffic.  And every turn
has about five apexes.  Uurpp. ;-)

By that measure, Ubisoft's early F1 jobs are king.  Nothing before or since
has been as likely to turn me green and sweaty.

It did indeed have a demo... which was awful, and stopped me buying the
actual game until it turned up on super-budget. The actual game, with a
bit of tweaking, can be quite fun.
