LFS Controller Questions

by bertr » Sat, 26 Jul 2003 10:50:56

Just downloaded the latest version of LFS, and am still deciding whether
to activate the full sim.

Had a heck of a time getting my controller calibrated properly within
the sim (TSW pedals) until I noticed the Calibration Lock feature.
Earlier version of LFS did not cause me any controller headaches.  My
brake pedal in particular had been going out of whack (always applied)
right after its first application, so I put in a new pot, but the
problem continued.  Then I found Calibration Lock and that solved the
problem.  Now, why would a feature like Calibration Lock even be offered
(and be off by default)?  Why wouldn't you want to lock your
calibration?

And why would brake peda calibration "drift" that far almost
immediately?  It doesn't seem to happen in other sims.

Finally, exactly what does "Thr/brk centre reduction" do?  I had to
slide this all the way to the right for my brake pedal to behave
properly.

BTW - I am running in split axis mode, using a MOMO wheel and TSW
(original) peds.

Thanks!
Bert

I'm not sure I can help directly, but I've been having trouble with
split axis in LFS with my Momo. That's probably down to me failing to
understand the controller config properly, but I'm using single axis at
the moment and it seems to work ok after a bit of experimentation.

LFS's controller setup does seem to be very flexible, I just don't have
a very flexible brain!

I think LFS's controller config screen is the most powerful config screen
I've ever seen in a game. It is organized quite weird, but all the options
are there. I think the LFS guys could really benefit from someone handling
the whole User Interface thing, I volunteer :)

>> BTW - I am running in split axis mode, using a MOMO wheel

I had some problems using a TSW and pedals too, but they "went
away" after playing a while, so I guess "calib lock" has taken
care of them.

The symtoms are that if I press the brake pedal slightly it
will sometimes get "stuck" at being applied half way, even
though I release the brake.

A hefty stomp on the pedal usually cures the problem in-car,
but well, now the problem has gone away all by itself it seems.

Other sims (papy, f1c) work fine on the same setup, so it's not
a pot / hw problem.

Cheers,

uwe

There's an option to pick separate axis gas and brake, and then you might
have to click invert on one or both

LFS Controller Questions

Thanks Uwe,

Yes, although the LFS controller screen has many options, it seems more
sensitive than most.  I just replaced my brake pedal pot and followed the
TSW pot settings procedure to insure that the ranges between throttle and
brake do not overlap.  (I set the raw values using GPL, and verified that
I'm not "riding" the brake when it's not pressed, using the NR2003 replay
screen.)  However, as soon as I try LFS, no matter what I do, the brake
pedal is always at least slightly applied.  This is verified in the
replays, as the brake lights are constantly flickering, even when the brake
pedal is not being touched.

Does anyone else have this problem?  If so, how did you solve it?  I want
to get LFS to work properly before buying it.

Thanks!

Bert

did you click the recalibrate button

Yes, I've clicked on recalibrate  -- many times.

I notice that the brake "drags" more, the further I drag the Brk/Throttle
balance slider to the left.  Dragging the slider all the way to the right
minimizes the drag, but it's still definitely there.

Yes, I had the exact same problem with my TSW.  Get DXTweak2 from
www.wingmanteam.com and adjust your Y axis settings.  I changed mine to:
Min 100
Cen 128
Max 255
You can save custom settings and reload them when needed.
LFS drives great now!!    Good luck.

Thanks, Gary.  DXTweak2 and your values did the trick!

I still have one question though, that still hasn't been asnwered.....  Exactly
what does "Thr/brk centre reduction" do?

Thanks again,
Bert

Hi Bert,

have you tried the rewiring trick on my website? It's easily
done (no soldering required) and no biggie (no soldering
required).

Best of luck,
