ea showed f12001 at the usgp.  they had a mclaren f1 shell that you
would sit in and drive the sim.  awesome.  i didn't get to drive it
though.  they let each person drive a 4 or 5lap race (against very
passive AI), which took about 6 minutes, and being the 20th person in
line meant a 2hr watit.  no thanks.  anyway, did anyone else see this,
or better yet, get to drive it?

regarding the release, the guy said that we were the first in the
public to see and drive the sim and that it was going to be released
in 3 weeks.  i know there's another thread here mentioning a release
date for this week.  <shrug>

Hmmm it's been out in Switzerland since friday Germany and Brazil since
saturday and Australia today, and should be out in the US tomorrow. I don't
think that the bloke knew what he was taking about.

Whhhattt???  So Where's the reviews then?  Or the "f1 2001 is a heap of
arcade junk" posts? :)

Glad to hear this, can't wait to pick it up on friday, I really need to get
going on my***pit :)

All the best,
Ash

I was there.  It looks to hold some promise.  One guy felt he could handle
it with all driver aids turned off.  I think he spun the car in
practically every way possible.  I didn't get to drive it, but I would
have liked to just to try to lay down some 1:15s laps, which would have
beaten pretty easily anyone else I saw(fastest was about 1:21 or so).

There's quite a bit on the High Gear forums, it sounds a bit like F12000 in
that is has potential but has been rushed out unfinished, it doesn't even
have Force Feedback support that's not from a beta that is from people who
have bought the store final. Apparently the graphics engine is still quite
inefficient but better than F12000, the physics and AI are very good, I
haven't heard much about how good the internet play is but it's in there.

I saw it, but didn't drive because events were upcoming, and the line was
too long.  But the Indy track looks considerably changed, for the better
(i.e.: Pit entrance, Turn 5-6 complex)  Cars didn't look much better than
the F1CS cars, but the detail level may have been down some.

i was thinking it was due to a crappy big-screen projection system.
or that computer was set to lowres graphics. <shrug>

did the demo use any aids?  i got a feeling that some aids had to be
on.   the car seemed way too catchable for the level of skill (or lack
of it) that was exhibited by many.

i saw a guy do a 1:16s.  having driven racing sims by myself (seems
like none of my friends get into f1 sims), i was instructive to see
the guy drive.  he was *very* smooth.

No FF support?  Good for them!  I sent ISI an e-mail back in August
telling them (politely!) about problems I was having with FF in SCGT and
F1CS2K.  I got a very nice response from Gjon Camaj, in which he openly
admitted that their FF code was not what they want it to be, and said,
"In fact, perhaps we'll just take it out of F1 2001 and only put it back
in when we get the time to do it right."  Sounds like he followed
through on that.  Hopefully that means we will eventually get a patch
with good FF in it.  I would much rather get good FF in a patch later
than crappy FF that isn't worth using and never gets fixed.  If they had
the balls to leave it out of the first release then I would say they
have really tried to go all the way on quality this time.  Now you might
ask why they released it at all in that case, and the answer is of
course because the publisher (EA) sets the release date, not the
developer.  I am sure ISI squeezed in as much development as they could
in the time EA gave them.  It was also apparent from Gjon's response
that most of their customers use joysticks and gamepads, and therefore
EA undoubtedly did not want to delay the release any further for the
sake of a feature (FF) that most of their customers wouldn't use.  We
may not agree with EA, but I think ISI made a good call under the
circumstances.

It would've been better to leave the F1CS FF in there, even if it hadn't
been changed.  Perhaps the new file formats had something to do w/ that...

The line was waaaaay too long so I didn't stick around to drive it.  Looked
alright, but they must have had the AI dialed way down - the 14 year old kid
sitting in the Mclaren shell pulled an awesome pass going into the first
turn off the start, splitting M Schumacher and one of the Williams and then
pulled away into the distance.  Graphics didn't look very different than F1
2000 CS.  After buying F1 2000 and then F1 2000 CS ( a big improvement), I
think I'll let this one pass me by.

Oh, and for the gpl fans- they had one of Dan Gurney's Eagles in the
historic car parade and I saw it sitting in the open in the infield, outside
the rope barrier.  Must have been about 40 people standing around it taking
pictures.  Beautiful car.  And the dashboard really is as bare and plain
looking as gpl represents it.  :-/

I watched a couple of laps and am shocked to learn that it really is
the new version. I thought it was the original since the start was
stutter stutter, stutter, stutter, etc.  I guess I'll wait on buying
this rather than getting the first day since I was not impressed.

Yeah, the line was way too long everytime I stopped by, too.  I kept seeing
people spinning all over the place.  At the same McLaren tent, I believe they
also had the game set up at where you could drive it standing up with a wheel.
I didn't see any pedals, so I'm not sure how this worked.  It was also in the
PlayStation trailer, controlled by some joystick-type device.

Yeah, what a beautiful car.  Either the car was having some problems (both
days) or the guy driving it was very slow (or just overly careful).  He went
from first to last in one lap and then trailed the field by a huge margin.  And
this was just a parade.  There was also a 1967 Brabham in the field and the two
of them  running up front at the start of the parade made for a nice sight.
The Brabham had some more modern looking, low-profile tires (although
treaded).  The 1967 Ferrari was advertised in the program, but didn't make it
to Indy.
