Problem with Modem Game in Nascar 2

by Jeffrey Jo » Mon, 16 Dec 1996 04:00:00

I have noticed, that on two seperate occasions, when I was racing
against my Brother and a friend, that on the pace lap before the start
of the race, that everyone on my screen would disappear and then we
would disconnect.  Both times I was connecting to them , once I had
second spot and the other time I was in last.
I have a US Robotics Sportster 28.8 Internal modem, using com port 3
and IRQ 5, and set 19200 in the modem settings.  I have Pentium 166,
32 mb ram and Using a 3D blaster PCI, and running the game from DOS 7,
after booting up into windows 95 and restarting in MS-DOS mode.  I am
running renddma.bat.
I connected at 19200 with .10 latency one time, and the other time
14400 with .11 latency.
All the intialization strings are the defaults that papyrus has for my
modem.  Occasionally as well, our computers will disconnect in
practice or in the menu screens.
Sometimes we will be connected for quite a while, and have a race, and
everything performs normally.
I was wondering if possibly I need to look more closely at my setup,
or if this is just a bug.  Has anybody else had this happen?
Once I was Michigan and the other time I was at Sears Point.
Reconnected, and tried again, and race would go fine. Both times this
happend, I was in the position behind the person I was connecting
with, and had driven in front of them on pace lap for brief periods.

Thanx

Tried the modem race for the first time yesterday...Some of the problems
we had to fix :
1-have to run modem through dos
2-have to have same racers listed in your multi list
3-speed settings have to be identical to the person you are connecting
with.

Hope this helps,

Scott

Jeffrey - from your description of the problems you've experienced modem
racing, it sounds like your telco and modems let you down.  NASCAR and
NASCAR II push modems pretty hard, so there are times when a connection
which seems fine otherwise runs into problems like you've described when
racing.  You might want to try connecting at 9600 baud rather than 14.4 or
19.2 K, and see if that improves your connections.

I'll keep your message on file in case there might be a new bug in NASCAR
II; thanks for the report of your problems.

The sportster has a known bug which normally shouldn't effect ***
because it is usually apparent during Data compression which most games
want to be turned off.  Here are a couple of suggestions.   Put S12=0 in
your init string.  Contact USR and ask for the new chip.  To check your
modem, type ATI7.  Then look at the supervisor date.  Tell that to USR and
they should have a fix for you.I believe any date after June of 96 should
already be fixed.(that command is A T (eye) Seven.
Good luck..  I've used the Sportser Vi DSVD and have stayed connected
without problems  during normal data connections.(DSVD is a-bit rougher)
