Hi,

Just wanted to say

WAHEY!!!!!!!!!!!!!

I went negative on GPLrank last night.
In the last 5 weeks I've gone from +19.83 to -0.46 :) :) :)

I'd like to thank some people.
Alison Hine and the LOR track guide people for their basic setups,
Greger Huttu for his gearbox ratios that I used on all my cars, Eldred
(yes really) because not long after I first uploaded a rank, the St
Eldreds Cup appeared on the rank list. I think Eldred was around +75 at
that time. I worked hard to get down from +120 and off the Eldred list.
The other laps then came as my driving improved. Lots of hard work at
Nurburgring and the last 20secs have pretty much all come from driving
the tracks I hated like Mosport, Monaco and Zandvoort. I see Eldred
himself is now in the mid 20's too so not long to go before he crosses
over to the dark side too. Good luck.

I also need to thank the makers of Replay Analyser which is a superb
tool for seeing where you lose time.  This was especially useful at
mosport where I seemed to be stuck in the mid 1.24's until I loaded up a
1.22 replay into the RA. I was up with the fast lap all the way until
the slow 90 right at the start of the back straight (moss?). I lost
0.5sec in that corner alone and a further second on the straight because
I was slow getting going. As a result I now have a pb of 1.23.06!

No trailbraking, no funny rear wheel steer setups.

To all those still in the red, keep trying, you can do it. Good luck

Kev

But... no trailbraking??? That's my one excuse for my lousy 1:58.12 at
Mexico - because I can't trailbrake (single axis). What else can you
do in T1/2???

GPL Rank is how you depress yourself by comparing your times with
others - (my experience - I'm currently at 114 ie 114 sec slower than
all the included hotlaps by Papyrus), Kevin just made negative ie he
is FASTER than Papyrus!

Other 'essentials' are Alison at

Congratulations. It feels  g o o d, doesn't it?

"In the red" = +ve rank? That seems the wrong way round somehow. I wish I
could convince my bank manager that -ve = "In the black"!

I think he means left foot braking... a lot of people confuse the two.

Actually, for T1-T2 at Mexico I don't trailbrake, I slow down in two more or
less straight applications (one before turn in and another once I've
turned), right foot braking of course, then scrub the last bit of speed away
by*** the rear out under trailing throttle while entering the
chicane-like bit.

You don't need dual axis to trailbrake.  The term just means continuing to
brake a little as you turn in.  It helps rotate the car into the turn more
than it otherwise would, and lets you keep a little more speed.  I do it
constantly, and I drive a Thrustmaster T2 (which has single axis pedals).

Perhaps you're thinking of the somewhat-controversial gas+brake technique,
which I shouldn't have even mentioned, thanks to the flamewars it always
seems to spawn...

Why? Is this something special? I gas/brake throu slower turns to get the
car drifting and to control the angle of exit. Is that what you mean? And
why does it start flamewars?

Yeah, I'm referring to the concept of applying a little bit of throttle
while simultaneously braking.  In GPL, this apparently stabilizes the
car (I wouldn't know-- single-axis pedals here).  There has been some
contentious discussion here as to whether or not this would work in the
real world, or whether it's something of a bug in GPL.

I *think* that the eventual consensus was this: it does work in the
real world.  The engine will somewhat overpower the brakes, reducing
braking effect in the rear, thus shifting the brake balance forward.
This is better than simply setting the brake balance further forward in
the setup, because you may not *always* want it forward; this way you
can use the throttle to dynamically adjust the brake balance as needed.
But, in the real world, this technique would be rather *** the brakes,
and would not be used routinely.  You can get away with using it routinely
in GPL, since GPL doesn't model brake wear.
