Geforce4 4400 ti - what fps improvement?

by Lee Buchana » Sat, 27 Apr 2002 21:22:08

I'm getting back on the track in N2002 after an extended layoff. I'm running
1.9g and 256mb. I just forked over $300 for the Geforce4 4400 ti and I'm
less than blown away by the fps improvement.

At 1024x768x16 and 30  cars drawn in front, 7 to rear, drawing distance 60%,
I'm getting mid to high 70s on backstretch alone at Daytona, 30s dipping
into the mid-30s with a full field in front. At Martinsville, i start out in
low 30s with full field in front. Haven't had a big wreck in front of me
yet -- except for a couple I had a slight role in -- so I don't know about
the frame-rate hit there.

I wasn't patient enough to run the game again on my old Geforce 2 64mb card
for comparison, but it seems like the fps with it weren't much worse: maybe
a high of 50 alone at Daytona, down to low 20s under same circumstances as
above.

Any insight or tweaking advice is appreciated. I'll take this pricey board
back if I can't do better than this. Thanks.

The real difference, from what I've heard, is in really high screen
resolutions or enabling FSAA.  Where the GF3 & 2's would slow down to a
crawl, the GF4 keeps a pluggin' along.    Also these puppies seem to be very
driver dependant...try some of the newer drivers and ask around for ones
that perform better with your OS.

I also have the 4400 card and I assume you are running OpenGL.

I had a geforce MX 2 32mb running on a 733mhz system before that I had
tweaked to give me 60-70 fps while sitting in the pits at Talladega.  Mind
you that to do this I had to turn down most of the graphic options.  That
said, it was still great performance from an underpowered system.

I just got a new 1.8 Ghz system with 4400 card.  Now I can have most all
graphic options on, 100% drawing distance, 25/4 cars and keep the fps above
30 with a 22 car field pace lap at Talladega.  By comparison the fps in the
pits alone is about 60, but this is with many more graphics on than before.

I might suggest that you visit this link and try the tweaks outlined there.
Even with a more powerful system these tweaks will get you more fps.

I was not exactly blown away by the 4400 performance with NR2002, but it
does allow me to turn almost everything up and stay playable.  However it
cannot keep the fps above 30 when showing a full 42 car field during the
pace lap with all the eye candy turned on.

Also, my son plays NASCAR Heat on the same system.  Heat seemed to have a
much greater peformance gain with the new card.  With Heat, we have
everything to the max and it plays very well.  This is good for my son, but
I have never liked Heat anyway.

 Hi,

First of all you did not mention if you are running in opengl so I
will assume you are running in D3D. My suggestion is to try opengl,
make sure you turn off AA and vertical sync in your video card setup.
Also go to the rend_ogl.ini file and make sure the AnisotropicLevel is
set to 0.I am running N2002 in opengl with a AMD XP1800 at
1200x1600x32 and get somewhere between 75-100 fps with a GeForce4 Ti
4600. I tested this card against my old GeForce2 64meg Ultra and found
the framerate increase to be huge. I have found that jacking up the
res is better than turning on the AA. Gives me a nice picture without
the framerate hit Hope this helps Steve

This gets into user preference and acceptable frame rates. My min is 30 fps
with a full field and everything maxed out. The average is much higher. On a
20" monitor in opengl I prefer 1280x960x32, Quincunx fsaa (less jaggies and
pixel popping then 1600x1200), anisotropic level 8-64 tap (better detail at
high angles on car decals and signs) and the level of detail set to -1.5
(any lower and I get moir in the chain link fences). Running a GF4

Like 99% of all current games - NR2002 is bogged down by the CPU.  This is
something that you pretty soon realise once you get a GeForce 4.  The only
game around which really taxes the GPU is F1 2001 (It gives the CPU and GPU
an equally good workout)  The only real difference I've noticed in most
games between my old GF2 MX and my Ti4600 is that I can run in higher
resolutions and colour depths (and AA sometimes, though I think the nVidia
AA is worthless)  Same old story - game developers are reluctant to use the
wonderful GF3 DX8.1 features for fear of games not running properly on Joe
Average's TNT2 Vanta.

This is roughly the same performance I am getting with a similar system,
except mine is a XP 2000+.

Getting 80fps minimum with a 30 car field online.  1600x1200x32 w no AA.

Thanks to all for the help.

So how do I disable antialiasing?
