horse racing tracks. Races in Europe (and to a lesser extent
the US) had been held on large circuits which comprised public
roads. Because the circuits were so large it was impossible to
charge spectators an admission fee.
Somebody had an idea of holding a race on a horse racing track
so that they could charge admission to all spectators. I think
it was just before 1910. After that the board speedways were
built and they led to the ovals and super speedways of today.
