Close enough. It is called Rockingham, it's mailing address is Sophia and it
is located near Hamlet (hence the back stretch 'Hamlet Tower' grandstands).
Lovingly called 'The Rock', North Carolina Speedway (an ISC track) is really
old, has an abrasive surface and is actually pretty fun to run. The track,
though cited as being in Rockingham, is nearly halfway between Southern
Pines and Rockingham NC off US HWY 1, both very small towns. Located across
the street (literally) is a nice drag strip, also referred to as 'The Rock'
by straight-liner fans. Home of the Winston Invitational until Bruton Smith
bought Bristol and moved (wooed) the event there and it is now a regular
event instead of the All Star race it was started as...The Rockingham
Dragway is now host to 2 IHRA national events per year.

NC is bad for calling tracks by wrong monikors, the Lowe's Motor Speedway
used to be called the C***te Motor Speedway and is located near downtown
Concord (about 20 minutes North of C***te off Hwy 85). I guess Concord
Speedway was already taken by the small track the DEJ used to run modifieds
at and Humpy/Bruton couldn't wrangle the naming rights away from the tiny
track.

About the only one they named properly was North Wilksboro. It is right
outside of the town off Hwy 421 and sits eeriely quiet nowadays though I
hear TRAC has it on their possible venue list. Had NW stayed 'in business',
my guess is Lowe's would have bought the naming rights to that track as the
Lowe's stores chain was founded in North Wilksboro, which is also home to
Junior Jonhson's sausage company and was his home base during his years in
the racing game. Makes since since it is in the foothills of the mountains
here in NC and Junior was indeed a moon shiner before getting into NASCAR.
NW is a sorely missed short track on the circuit today, I guess they favor
the cooky cutter 1.5 mile tracks now...I still have it in NASCAR Legends
though, hehe. Trivia tidbit: Who won the last  NASCAR Winston Cup race at
North Wilksboro? Was it A) Darryl Waltrip B) Dale Earnhardt (Sr) C) Terry
Labonte or D) Jeff Gordon? Keep in mind the track closed in the early
90's...

I am pretty sure the answer is D) Jeff Gordon. Was there last fall and the
walls in the local Applebees are a shrine to the track and the people
involved with it. I think JG was the winner in the last event there before
NASCAR took it off the schedule.

The arcade game Rush (The Rock) had an Alcatraz track.
Always liked that game-trying to find hidden shortcuts to improve
your lap times...

NW's a great track; what stock car racing is, or at least, was all about
until Nascar became cool.

Re the trivia, 1996 was it's last year on the WC circuit........think it
was Jeffy?  I tend to block his victories out, on purpose :)

'96 huh? I was thinking more like '94 but couldn't remember and spewed all
that useless trivia out from memory waiting on a business call this
morning....I do think Jeffy was the last winner, though I am no huge fan of
his either...1996, Sounds ok to me, and that does play into about when
NASCAR started to become 'cool', good way of putting that.

I saw N.W. again when Darryl W and Junior J were getting ready to take his
old Monte Carlo to the Goodwood Speed thing over in England this past year,
they shook it down at the track (and was covered by Totally NASCAR). The
track looked very neglected indeed, I think they had to pull some weeds out
of the asphalt before he could run...what a shame. The Mrs and I have a
cabin in (somewhat) nearby Boone, NC and used to go to the races there until
1994. We then started hopping over to (somewhat) nearby Bristol and going to
the August night race there. It would be nice to go to N.W. again, maybe
TRAC will run there if they ever actually become a racing body instead of a
PR body. I hear us North Carolinians are going to share a team with the
South Carolinians thy way we share the NFL Carolina Panthers. Hopefully the
TRAC 'team' will fare better.

*(somewhat): relative term in rural NC, means more than ? hour and less than
2 hours away.

Yep, I'm sure '96 was it.  Bob Bahre(Loudon track owner) owns it now, and
last year, he literally said, "It can rot as fas I'm concerned" regarding
NW.  Yet, he won't sell it either.

Really to bad; ring the top with suites for the smoozers like Bristol,
build up the other stands, and it'd be rolling in the big time.  But Nascar
already thinks the SE is an over-saturated market, so it's a "when hell
freezes over" type of affair.  Heck, not even Busch or trucks are running
there........nothing at all.

Some of the best races I remember were at that track.
