How on earth does one get decent at Silverstone???  It's so
(relatively) featureless compared to the Glen or Monza.  I have a
terrible time identifing markers for brakepoints, etc.  It's really
rather frustrating as I have a great time on the two aforementioned
tracks...

Well I just ran a couple laps around the Nurburgring. YIKES!!! I'm not
surprised anyone fears this track. This track needs pacenotes. At least I
won't have any trouble beating my PB next time around (12:01 he he),

>How on earth does one get decent at Silverstone???

<snip>

Practice, I'm afraid!

Two tips that helped me are: slide through Maggotts in fourth (ie
don't brake, just lift a bit), and take Woodcote in a highish third,
holding steady the whole way round. These two, along with not
overdoing it through the trickier-than-it-looks Club/Abbey section,
cut two seconds off my time.

I'm not any sort of setup expert, but I think the default setups (I'm
using v1.2) with about 10 laps of fuel work quite well. I got my PB
down below 1:32 with those (in the Lotus).

I must confess that we Brits probably have an inbuilt advantage at
Silverstone, through being very familiar with the layout. Conversely,
I suspect most Americans find the Glen much easier than I did - I only
had the vaguest idea of how it went when I bought the game.

It's worth the effort - it's a fabulous track for close racing.

(Incidentally, Mr Noonan - how about Oulton Park next?)

Thanks.  I'll try those tips out first thing.

Yes, I now drive the Brabham more than any other car in GPL, and it's a
great car to drive, possibly for the same reasons that's it's a
difficult car to learn with.

I really have to disagree with you here. Curva Grande, the Lesmo's and
the Parabolica are all fascinating corners. I drove thousends of
practice laps on Monza, yet I still have big fun beating my own pb.
And the long straight after the Parabolica is a good place to quickly
smoke a cigarette :)

Andre

I found the Coventry the easiest to drive due to its weight (better
braking), but I soon left it for the Eagle, and now I am racing the
Ferrari . . . I find that I am faster in the Eagle, but I am not
consistant in the Eagle. I also find switching tracks helps much in
assisting one overcome a PB that is too slow. I started racing Monza
and burned out on it quick, only getting to a 1:45. I then moved to
Spa, never really getting a consistant time that I would dare to
mention. Went back to Monza, tried to learn Mexico and Zandy (what a
joke!) then on to Watkins. I can do a pretty consistant 1:12, but no
faster. I am now learning Silverstone, and I am at a 1:41 right now. I
may not be fast, but I try to be like the turtle . . . consistant.

And a good place to down a quick beer too! The down side is I lose
positions when I have to pull-off to the side of the track to take a
piss!  Another drawback is that my lap times seem to get worse as the
race progesses...I don't know why.
