Problems with MS-CART that I have not seen mentioned

by Daniel J. Plantho » Sun, 28 Dec 1997 04:00:00

I was wondering if anyone else had seen these problems:

1. Inadequate steering locks.   The Vancouver track is totally
undriveable,  as the car cannot steer around the hairpins.  Problems
also at Laguna Seca and Long Beach.  I am hoping this will be fixed by
Patch #1 (it has been mentioned).

2.  Odd track conditions at Mid-Ohio.  The Mid-Ohio track is modeled
better than in X-car, but around the 180 at the keyhole (at the end of
the straights, I think that is the name) the car behaves as if it is
driving over a dodecahedron, i.e. a many faceted solid, not a smooth
pavement track (this is most notable off line, I am a bad driver at
this track).  It also happens at the left hander over the crest after
the Start straight.  Since I have never heard of this from another
person, I wonder if it is just me. (clunk - clunk - clunk).

3.  Long pauses in races.  I have seen mention of this before, but not
much fixing.  The screen will hang, but the sound continues with
throttle input, but when the screen resumes, it is from the point of
the hang.  Kinda' disconcerting.  Does this go away with a 3dfx card?

On another note (here is the kindling), I do wonder where the "broken
promises" from Microsoft surfaced, as when I looked at the box
(unfortunately now thrown away), I could not find any claims that were
unsubstantiated (as I interpreted them).  Nor could I see that any
interpretations needed more latitude than those for any other game.
Maybe I set my expectations lower than others (surely, as I am about
to find out), but I am pleased by the game, and enjoy playing it.  As
for comparisons, I play GP2 and have played ICR1 (ICR2 fell in between
computer purchases, and I was never very interested, still am not).  I
am pleased (in some way) that MS-CART is discussed, critiqued, and
ridiculed (by some) in this forum, as this indicates to me that there
is perceived hope for this game in the future (unlike such games as
X-Car, Power F1, and Andretti Racing).  I know that I am an anomaly as
far as performance, as I will accept 15 fps, with detail missing,
drive with a joystick, and don't have a 3dfx card (yet, am waiting for
Voodoo 2, and won't buy a card from Diamond - remember the original
Viper (power 9000) and Speedstar cards - totally unsupported).  I have
been lurking in this discussion for months, and have seen it dominated
by naysayers (you know who they are) as far as number of posts.
However, I do suspect that there are quite a few persons like myself,
who just watch, and still enjoy the game.

I realize that I should probably have put this in two posts, but oh
well,  maybe someone will split this into two threads.

These are MY opinions, feel free to disagree, but you will not change
my mind.

yes the "old" Diamond support really sucked.  However they have really
been aggresive in supporting the Monster 3d.   How many driver updates
have there been??  Lots.  The key, I think with diamond, is they tend to
try and build almost every kind of card and then only get behind the ones
that sell buckets.  I think the Monster 3d is a good product, haven't
heard of any complaints since the very first weeks after it's
introduction.  I would expect any Diamond Voodoo2 would probably receive
the same commitment.  Time will tell...One key will be whether the V2 is a
6meg or 12 meg card....if 12, you can bet Diamond will be betting the
ranch on it's sucess...dave henrie
