Hello,

Graphics cards based on the new NVidia GeForce256 chip is starting to appear
on the shelves, although only with 32 MB SDRAM for now but faster and bigger
memory will come in a few months.

Have anyone tried this thing with GPL and the OpenGL driver yet ?

I have a GeForce 256, i'll try to try ( can i say that ? ) GPL Friday night.
I think the improvments won't be big because GPL isn't T&L complient.
however GeForce 256 is full opengl ICD ( no mirror problems ? ) and is 4 pass
pixel when TNT2 is 2 pass.
Quake3 run at 1600x1200x32 bit at 40fps.
Stay in touch.

Check out Toms Hardware on the net for a good review on the GeForce. Looks to me
like the faster ram is worth the wait.  The SDRAM model performed well, but the
DDR ram (not sure if that is what it's called) far exceeded it.

Yes, it looks like a card i would really want, but if it doesn't equal my
V3 3000 on a P3 450 with GPL there is no use.

I think it is for "Double Data Rate" which utilizes SGRAM. For SDRAM version, it is called SDR (for single data rate).

SDR version (from CL) is avaliable here in Hong Kong but I think I am giving it a pass and wait for DDR.

Griffin.

Soon very will be a "pro" version of the GeForce256 : The Quadro, it will have,
an hardware support for line and vertices. a faster GPU and a better fill rate

check this : http://www.nvidia.com/Products.nsf/htmlmedia/Quadro_main.html

DDR is the real next "Big Thing" for RAM.  Both main memory and Video
Memory.

Now, if we can only get that slow, expensive, useless RAMBUS Monkey off our
backs so the market doesn't get screwed up and fragmented :(
