the guts to my current Dell system into it.What are some of the best 8x
motherbords these days.

P4 2.53
Ti4600 soon to be replaced with the FX
1 gig PC800
Audigy 2
120 gig hd

Check out the Intel E7205 (granite bay) chipset boards if you want the 8x:

I personally went with the Intel D845PEBT2 board (845PE chipset), with the
same cpu as you and an ATI 9500Pro, and am well pleased with it.

Of course you'll need to get new memory with these boards, because they
don't work with your Rambus.

Better check your Dell case.

They make a custom board to fit their  custom case.

Unless they have changed this practice,  a non Dell board might not fit.

PS  That is the only complaint I had about my old Dell.

I think he said he wanted to swap the case, power supply, and motherboard,
but keep the rest.

Duh!   Right Bill.

And Dell also uses proprietary Power Supplies as well IIRC.
