OT: 60's and 70's era videos - recommendations?

by Rafe McAulif » Sat, 05 Feb 2000 04:00:00

I've just ordered the "in car 956" video (Duke) as recommended by
many, but would love to get hold of some footage of full F1 races, or
at least extended footage of the racing from the races in the 60's or
70's. Almost all of the videos seem to try to cram an entire decade
into 60 minutes, reducing each race to about a minute of footage, if
you're lucky. Even something like the '95, '96, '97 etc. summary type
videos, but for a particular year in the 60's or 70's would be
fantastic. I don't know whether the footage exists or not, but would
love to see it if it does.

Any recommendation of anything even vaguely fitting my description? Or
any other videos that are pretty good and worth spending a dollar on?

TIA

SpeedVision and a VCR....? <G>

I don't really know of some good F1 videos that cover any specific
year, but if you're looking for racing in general, 'American Nitro
Saga of the Funny Car' is damn good and the HAVOC series shows a lot
of old stuff but they're mainly just wrecks from everything and don't
really go into a lot of info.

Either way, Duke Video should have what you want....  that reminds me,
I need to order a catalog...

It's a damn pity that we don't get that kinda stuff over here is
Australia. Foxtel occasionally has something reasonable, but I would
love to be able to see that "9 Days in Summer" that was apparently on
Speedvision. No cable channels like that over here tho, pity.

Try to find "If you ain't winning - you ain't trying".
Covers the 1972 (?) Season from JPS Lotus' point of view. Really great
video!

Best,

Thanks for the recommendation, just found it in my Duke catalog.
Actually the '73 season, sounds like a goer. Added to the list...

Well, there's "Nine days in Summer" which you probably know about, if
not it's all about 1967, the GPL season, from a Lotus point of view.
Also featuring Lotus is "If you're not winning, you're not trying",
which follows the team throughout the 1973 GP season.

Duke Video stock both of them.

"The Ringmasters" from Duke has a reasonable coverage of the the Ring in
'67.

being screened over here...

Although several people have suggested some good videos, generally
speaking you're going to be out of luck. Proper TV coverage of GPs only
started in the early 80's, so most 60's and 70's vids seem to be
collections of highlights from promotional films. Occasionally you get a
good one like "Nine days in Summer" or "Ringmasters".

What I'd like is a video of the last F1 races at the Ring, say 74, 75 and
76. I've never been able to find anything other than snippets of these.

The last F1 GPs on the Ring are said to have had very good TV
coverage. Maybe not so much for the German audience, but for foreign
stations . I can't remember which station was in charge of providing
the coverage, WDR, SWF or ZDF. Apparantly, the experience and
equipment from the 1972 Olympics and the 1974 Soccer World Cup were
used. I've read reports about the numbers of cameras, length of cables
etc. in books about the Ring.
The famous Lauda crash film was taken by an amateur, though.

Some stations offer the service of sending video tapes of recent

But usually this is rather expensive.

Have you ever seen videos of these races for sale? Even in German
language they would be of great interest.

Like the womens 4x400m relay in Munich? ;->

No, I've not seen videos for sale.

But I just received a reply from the TV station, saying that they have
a lot of F1 in their archives. I'll see what I can get.

It'd be fantastic to be able to go through a station's archives, get
hold of all that stuff. Don't know how helpful the Australian networks
would be though...

After doing some more intensive searching of the Duke video offerings,
I've found some called "Grand Prix 1970-71", also 72-73, 74-5, 76-7
and 78-79. Fairly pricey videos, but I'm sure they'd have great
footage, since they are concentrating on only 2 years. About 50-55
mins running time, they look like they'd be pretty good. Can't say
what footage of the 'ring they have, has anyone seen these???
