I tried last night for the first time to hook up with a friend for an online
race in NASCAR3.
We didn't manage it, mainly becasue the UK manual is totally inadequate in
respect of describing the multiplayer options.
There is no explanation about IP addresses, the various setup screens, etc.
In particular there is no cluse about what the column headings are in the
'races' screen, eg. D,Y, etc.
Can anyone help here? Is the US manual better? could anyone OCR the relevant
pages?
Thanks,
Iain

The US manual is not any better in its explanation of the multiplayer
feature.

Thanks that was quite useful, but do you know what the column headings mean
in the 'available races' screen?
also, I was racing last night, and although I was ahead for all the race,
the positions when using F2 were pretty much rubbish! They started off OK
then kept jumping me from any position from 1st to last being 2-3 laps
behind!
It did acknowledge the fact that I won, but it was a waste of time trying to
keep tabs on what was behind.
Is this normal?

It can be normal. Especially if you have alot of warping/clockzapping.
I was doing one race last night at Dega where I was .09 behind the
1st and 2nd place cars. Next thing I know, they teleport ahead to 2.5
secs. Then the 2nd place cars screws up and hits the pits at 200+.
Then the leader pitted and claimed he didn't want to win by warping.
I told him he could race with me any time :-)

Greg,
What is warping/clock zapping?  Doesn't this make racing online a bit of a
joke?  Especially when you can't tell what the relative positions are of the
other cars. Although I've been into racing simulators for years, this is the
first time I've raced online in this way. I used to connect one modem to
another.
also, do you know what the headings mean in the races available screen in
N3?

>What is warping/clock zapping?

Warping is when cars disappear and/or jump around erratically,
sometimes appearing in places you least expect. It can make driving
very troublesome.
Clock zapping is a timing thing, where internet lag can make you jump
around in the standings ie: shows you in 7th when actually your in
3rd. If you get alot of clock zapping, then your connection to the
race host/server is not very good.
Living in the UK doesnt help you much, since most people that are
hosting races are more than likely from North America.
The quality of your internet connection as a whole and to the race
host is imperative for good online racing on the internet. Although if
you do have a good connection, it doesnt mean everyone else will. One
way to tell if it is your connection that is suffering is to watch the
other cars. If ALL of them disappear then it most likely your
connection but if only one car disappears/re-appears etc, then it is
his connection, so be careful. :)

The price to pay when playing for free through the internet. :)
Find a good host and it can be enjoyable.
.....BTW, what kind of pings are you getting to the race host(s)?

Modem racing is much better connection wise, but they didnt
incorporate it into the game.

see my other post

Good luck!

It is when the network connection loses sync and can't really keep up
with everything. Whenever I have seen clock zappping the other cars
dissapear. Then magically reapear as the connection syncs up. Then
sometimes the other cars just plain teleport to their position. Sometimes
changing by several seconds.

Yes it is somewhat of a joke. The worst part is the constant crashing
of the computer during multiplay. This is by far the worse game I have
ever played with regards to computer program crashing. And you have
to power cycle to get it going again. If it worked flawlessly it would be
awesome though.

Me too. So far my friend and I have given N3 fairly poor multiplay
scores.

Yes. It was also posted here some time ago. They are for the game options
which the host has selected.

D = Damage R is realistic damage, A is arcade and no letter is none.
P = Pace laps
Y = Yellow flags

And so on. You can pretty much look at the letters and consider the options
within the game to figire it out.

In my experience this did not matter at all. I was hosting a race with
125 ms ping times and the game *STILL* crashed when the 7th or
8th player joined.

I may be wrong, but it seems to me I read about this same problem some time
back here on RAS.  Wasn't it cured by entering a couple AI cars in too?
Maybe a Deja search can turn something up for you.

Hope this helps ya!

Try making the field size a few cars more than the allowed players.

That reminds me to ask: why have I NEVER seen an online race with AI
drivers?  Doesn't N3 allow you to have a 43-car field with only 10 humans?
Why don't people do that?  Personally I prefer to see SOME driver throughout
the race, and since I'm a "rear 2/3rds of the pack" driver I only see others
when they're lapping me (hey, I'm slow, but I AM clean - I stay out of the
way when they're coming).

Well check out some of the races I (hammer-time) host. I will start using 8
humans and a 20 car starting field...
