Wheel clamps

by Haqsa » Mon, 04 Jun 2001 10:07:14

I am looking for a good wheel setup, but I have a unique requirement.
The desk I use has a lap drawer that is 5 inches deep.  The drawer
itself is not sturdy enough to clamp to, and I don't want to have to
remove it every time I want to use my wheel.  The top of the desk has an
overhang that is about 3/4 inches wide.  In other words, if I could find
a wheel that only needs to clamp to the outer 3/4 inches of the desk,
and doesn't extend any deeper, it would work.  Does anyone know of such
a wheel?

Thanks,
Hal

LWFF (new style) isn't much more than 3/4" maybe 7/8".  I really doubt
you'll find a secure wheel that has less clamp area than the LWFF (which,
IMO, isn't that secure).

Hmm.  Not real impressed with the button layout on the LWFF.  Another
possibility is that if the clamps are less than 4.5" in height, I might
be able to fit the wheel on with the drawer just pulled out a few
inches, so that the clamps fit inside the drawer.  Any wheel with clamps
that are less than 4.5" high prior to tightening and less than 23" apart
would probably fit inside the drawer.  I already know that the
Sidewinder and the Thrustmaster Ferrari won't fit in those dimensions
(it was REAL difficult returning that Ferrari wheel btw, what a jewel!),
but perhaps there are others.  Any more suggestions?

Thanks again,
Hal

I feel your pain. The only solution I've found for the moment is to keep my
lap drawer on top of my dresser.   : )

That is, until I finish building my dedicated sim station.

F*cking wow!  Those are pretty cool looking.  Most likely a tad beyond
my budget though.  :o)

Why don't you just open your drawer enough to get claps under the desk and
then close the drawer as far as you can?  In case you haven't tried that.

That's a good suggestion, but as I mentioned above in another reply, the
drawer is only about 4.5" deep, which still prevents some clamp systems
from working.  So if I can find a wheel that has clamps that require
less than 4.5" height to install and close that would probably work
also.  Unfortunately the MS Sidewinder and the Thrustmaster Ferrari
already flunked that test also.  Right now I'm thinking that the TM
Nascar Pro Digital 2 might work, but I need to find one on display in a
store so I can measure it.

Thanks,
Hal

Because a: The drawer isn't deep enough, and b: it's got stuff in it.

I got an idea!  Take a piece of 3/4" plywood and set it under your monitor
and protruding from the desk and clap it to that.   Just throwing out ideas,
because I  don't know of any wheels that only clamp on by that little amount
you were asking about.

If I understand this right then the LWFF should work.  The "J" part of the
clamp is maybe 1-1.5" high and about 1 to 1.25" long.  If it helps I can
email you a small digital picture of the clamp.

Many people find the ECCI heavy enough that they find they don't need
clamps.

Or at least it sounds like a good excuse for trying to aquire one.

That's a good idea too, but I also use this desk and computer for other
things besides ***.  If I have to go to that length, it would
probably be easier to just pull the drawer out.  Thanks for the ideas,
though.

I'm not familiar with the ECCI.  Where would I find one?  URL?

No need to mail a picture.  I think you are right, it probably will
work.  Not sure yet whether I want force feedback though.  I tried a TM
Ferrari force feedback wheel with N4, and I couldn't even get around the
track.  I suppose it's just a matter of getting used to it, but I wonder
whether it wouldn't be just as good to get a non-FF wheel.
