GPL startup troubles

by Mike » Thu, 30 May 2002 03:57:35

About a month ago I d/led and installed the GPL demo just to give it a
try...and it worked great for a few weeks. Then one day I went to play it,
and it didn't start - it showed the splash screen (with the version # at the
bottom), and then it booted me back to the desktop. I re-installed it a
bunch of times, installed it to different directories, different hard
drives, and it still wouldn't start up...

Since I liked the game I decided to order the full ver, and just figured
that the full version would work, especially after I patched it.. well today
it came, and guess what: still doesn't work :(

Anybody know what at all would cause this?  I'm using Windows 2000 SP2 on a
pIII-500 w/ a GF2-MX400 (28.32 drivers)

Another weird thing I notice is that even after I run the patch, the version
number at the bottom of the opening screen is still 1.0.0.0 for some
reason..

Any help on these things would be greatly appreciated. thanks.

I'm having thw same problem right now, had it before, and a total removal of
the old gpl folder, removing of the registry entries, and to make sure
defragging solved it the first time.
GPL worked fine for months after that, then boom no more gpl.....but hey, i
know howe to solve this right........??
WRONG!!!!......same steps as before, but now nothing.........
still working on it....I refuse to do a full reformat.....

Most gpl startup probs like these are driver related ... try some
older/different vid card drivers.

Did you install over the demo?  Sounds like you've got the remnants of the
sample build still there.  Make sure it is uninstalled, your folders are
deleted (look in Windows Explorer) and you've searched the Registry and
removed any entries there, too.  After you install the main program again,
make sure you run the appropriate updates BEFORE trying to run the game.

Are you using the latest patch?   That's what my problem was... (i think)
Stupidly I didn't read the instructions for the patch, they said that you
gotta extract the files to a temp directory first and I was just goin
straight to the GPL dir.

Just a hunch, but do you have administrator rights when you install
it? Maybe something going on there...

Also, I've heard that quite a few people blame NTFS hard drives as
their problem, although numerous people have had no trouble. Just
another thing to look at.

I was able to re-install mine on my win2k NTFS partition.  I did a "run as
administrator" on the setup file.  I was pleasantly surprised when it actually
worked...
