Heh, it seems after every showing of 'Grand Prix' on TCM or wherever, the
same questions always get asked.  (I'm not complaining, I asked those same
questions myself.)  There is a 2 paragraph bit of info about 'Grand Prix' in
the Resources section of the larger GPL manual for those interested.  Also,
someone should compile a FAQ made up of the common questions that are always
asked about the movie.

By the way, has anyone ordered that "In Car 956" video?  I would like to see
Derek Bell casually describing the track while turning hotlaps at the 'Ring.
I took my first laps there last night and am very interested in any
historical info I can find about it.  (I hope I can get around it tonight in
less than 24 minutes)

In Car 956 is wonderful.  Derek's commentary (in-car at some tracks, but
voice-over at others) is terrific.

Watching it again after learning the Nurburgring in GPL was uncanny.  I
know exactly where Derek is, and precisely the problems he's dealing
with, at any given moment.  The only major differences are the
elimination of the south loop in the circuit used in the video, and the
smoothing out of some of the jumps.

My mate has the in-car 956 video - the video quality is not great by todays
standards (you should see the size of the camera Derek has in the car - it
takes up the passenger seat!) but it's well worth getting. Derek Bell makes
the ring look easy! Check out the length of the old le-mans straight on the
video also.

If you're interested in more Nrburgring info check out my website (address
below) and some of the links on it (Ben Lovejoy's ring page and Espen
Martinsen's Speed page are both v.good)

Yep, and it's still available from Duke, Cat Code 3526. Not only do you get
the Ring in 6:50, but also laps at Kyalami, Brands Hatch, Silverstone, Spa,
Le Mans and Fuji. Strangely, the biggest thrill for me was not the Ring
(perhaps too familiar after GPL, although still an astonishing sight) but
the Mulsanne straight at Le Mans, driven at 245 mph!

Bye,
Leo

I'm with you on that one!  I remember when my Dad and I first sat down and
watched the tape the day I recieved it.  The phrase "Holy Shit!" came out
of our mouths in almost perfect unison as Bell went flying down the
Mulsanne.

You just have to go to Le Mans race . The restaurant on the Mulsanne
Straight is just inches from the track. I was there before the chicanes were
put in and it definately was an awsome place , especially at night. Still
pretty good with a camp site right next door.

Hmmm, what and where is this "Duke"?  I'd like to pick up this video.

BTW, I had the pleasure of driving 5 laps on it recently, alas in a 1.6L
Audi A4 (100 hp).  Wasn't too proud of my <12 min time (it's hard to do
an accurate timing as you have to "pit" after each lap, with signs
advising you slow, so no full straight).  Also did a lap with a very
good amateur in a 5-series who was there to shoot a BMW 3.0 CSL for an
English car mag ("Heritage and Classic Cars" or some such).  Nice chaps.
For a race fan, this place is NOT to be missed!

Go to www.dukevideo.com - you can order from there.

I had a go myself last summer (7 laps) in a 96 hp car and the best I did
was approx. 12 mins too, in spite of my intimate (GPL-derived) knowledge
of the track. I found it was the sloppy suspension that made me hold
back (that and the crazy bikers whizzing past on all sides:-). Also, 96
or a 100 hp is not going to give you any speed on the long climbs like
the one from Bergwerk. Still, I had a ball and want to do it again!

Huh? Crazy? What gives you the right to call us crazy just because we want
ride FAST around the Ring?!?!?

Just kidding ... In fact, some of the bikers really are crazy :)
