Hawaii: Smoking Track

OK, the cat is now out of the bag, so I can comment...

It's true, folks, virtual Talladega is haunted!  Since we created the
thing almost 2 years ago, there have been a number of strange
incidents surrounding the track.  The bogus smoke & dust that Jason
has seen is only the tip of the iceburg.  We have seen & documented
numerous instances of moving walls, egyptian graffitti in the pits,
UFO ***s, bigfoot sightings & erratic driving by Elmo in the
pace car.  He is so afraid, he's about to quit & go work for
Microprose!  We've even heard some reports that the track has
virtually transported itself to a location near a beach in Florida,
slightly altered its form, added a lake & changed its name (though
there does seem to be some controversy regarding the name).  And yes,
the Loch Ness monster has been seen in that lake!

Worst of all, one of the artists that originally created the track
mysteriously disappeared late one night while working on the NASCAR 2
revision to the track.  According to one eye witness, "one minute,
Danny was right there, typing away... the next thing I know, I hear a
giant sucking sound & he was gone in a puff of blue smoke... wierd,
man! I warned him not to install Phantasmagoria & Leisure Suit Larry
on his machine.  It's the combination, man... it's evil!!!"

People, stay far, far away from virtual Talladega!   We've called in
Scully & Moulter to investigate, and we have Tom Cruise & the IMF team
on stand-by.

Has anyone else seen puffs of smoke come off the Talladega track
on Hawaii, when there are no cars in sight?  I've also seen the dirt
kicking up too for no apparent reason.  How long does the smoke/dirt
persist after it is produced?  I saw this phenomenon around 4:00 am
Fri June 7.

Speaking of which ...  What a good time!  Nothing like that feeling of
despair as you see the cars in front of you disappear in a cloud of
smoke into which you must go, travelling 190mph. :-)

Is there anyone else reaching for a paper bag to breath into when you
count up how long you've been on, and the corresponding long distance
charge?  Thanks Papyrus, for providing this oppurtuinity to test the
strength of many a marriage I'm sure. :-)

Last time I raced at Talladega, Elvis was part of my pit crew.
No kidding.

I've run into this bug. I have (had?) a replay file at Martinsville where
the smoke persisted on the track the entire race and kept accumulating
every time there was an incident. Really screwed up my frame rate and made
the replay file HUGE!

I know what you mean, need to change your shorts after one of those. <G>

Maybe, like Washington State, they got cheap and used old tires for
road-fill:

"Washinton state officials closed two highways with chunks of ***
from old tires after the road began smoking and oozing a toxic, oily
goo that threatened marshes on the Columbia river. ... In December,
asphalt pavement laid over the fill began to crack, split, and give
off wisps of noxious smoke, with temperatures up to 160 degrees. In
southeastern Washington, meanwhile, a 350-foot stretch of a Garfield
County road began emitting smoke and even flames shortly after another
repair job late last year used chipped tires."

Yeah Ed. On another occasion my car went 45,000+mph, flipped over the
grandstand, came back on to the track, and wiped out the field.
