Cart Racing Doesn't work with new 400mhz computer

by Mike » Sun, 21 Mar 1999 04:00:00

I just got a new HP 400mhz pentium II computer, and installed Cart racing
(the sierra game) on it.  When I try and run the windows version of the
program (with direct X checked) I get 2-4 frames per second.... Yes, thats
TWO to FOUR frames a second for about 10 seconds till the whole thing just
freezes up.  It has a Rage Pro Turbo AGP built in, and I have a Monster II
12 meg card (ya, I know the game isn't 3dfx).  I don't know what version of
direct X I am running, where the hell do you check it.  I went to Sierra's
web site and I don't see any patches that look like they would help.... I am
stumped.....  Note that I have many other direct X games running just fine
on the machine, and several 3dfx games running REALLY great on the machine.
Any ideas ??

Sorry but I'll bet your screwed.   The windows version never
worked that well to begin with.  The dos/rendition install does run
REALLY REALLY well if you have a Renditition based 3d card,
but with the ATI card, you might as well say adios to CART racing.
Sierra is not gonna support this OLD, OLD title anymore, other
than including it in a bunch of repackaged box sets.
Remember, CART racing(ICR2) came out BEFORE any 3d cards
were around and they only patched it to run with Rendition cards.
Nascar Racing 99 has 3dfx support(try the TPTCC patch for GREAT
road course racing)  And GPL has 3dfx and Open GL support, however I
have heard the Open GL version still has problems with framerate from
the inside the***pit view...(which is the ONLY view ....:}   )
Don't throw away your CARt set, cuz there are plenty of ways to
use the tracks in other Papy sims.  But get used to Old programs
like ICR2(CARt) not working with your new system.
Good luck!

Mike,

I've had the Windows version of ICR2 running on my PII-450 without any
problems. I don't have it installed anymore as I finally got the Rendition
version to run with my Genoa VRaptor V2200 card but it did work fine when I
had it installed. The frame rate was quite high (like 50-60 fps) if you can
believe the frame rate readout in the sim. The sound was terrible though.

I suppose thats fine if one prefers those racing series, but lets face it
Cart Champcar rules ! There's no substitute for high powered Cart
Racing.

I have a 400mhz PII as well and I get 60 fps on average in Windows.  I don't
know what would cause it but I suggest doing a test in the setup window.  It
should alert you to trouble areas.

I've got a Celery 450a with Matrox Mill G200 8MB.  I also have the oldest
version on the CD (non-windows, non-rendition), and the Windows patch
doesn't work too well...just set it to reboot to DOS mode...it is fast...

Try this-Start program,go to options-sound,uncheck Direct Sound.If you
still have problems go to graphics-advanced,uncheck Direct Draw. This
solved the problem for me,now I get 60-90 FPS w/c450a.
