New PC keeps CTD - Help?

by Rudebo » Thu, 13 Mar 2003 03:15:37

Built my self a new box over the last couple of weeks.

ASUS A7N8X Deluxe MB, Athlon XP 2200+, Win 98SE, and my old gf2mx400 64mb
ram (can't do everything at once).

I installed all the up to date drivers 41.?? for the GPU.

Surprisingly good framerate for everything including F1 2002 and NR 2003
except it CTD with no error message all the time.  Does it in GPL, F1 2002,
HEAT, NR 2003 & SCGT.  It doesn't do it with any prosaic programs which
leads me to believe its a GPU and/or driver issue (although I do recognize
that all components CPU, RAM etc. are being way more taxed during a sim than
in writing a letter to Gran in Word I still Tend to think its a GPU issue.)

The CTD seem to happen at random times, 5 sec into a GPL race, on the third
lap of testing in F1 2002, no CTD at all in a 3 lap GPL race at Spa.  I've
started to log them manually to see if there are any patterns, length of
time computers been on, number of cars visible etc.  No patterns have
emerged yet.

Every thing but Systray and Explorer are turned off.

I had some problems with the GPU in the old box although not this specific
problem and if I recall I went back to a 21.?? driver, do you think this
might help?  Or is the GPU to small for the MB and gets pushed to far and
crashes, and should I just bit the bullet and get a gf4Ti (part of me wants
this to be the case.  Not the wallet part).

Just one last thought I ordered Generic OEM PC3200 RAM before I realized
there might be a compatibility problem, turned out there wasn't and it never
fails to recognize it on Boot Up. Still I wonder if that might be an issue.

TIA

Could be a heat issue as well. Might want to recheck your cooling setup.
Your video card is a bottle neck, but that shouldn't cause crashes.  Have
you looked to see if there are any issues with the Nforce2 chipset and
Win98SE? It sounds like a motherboard driver issue to me if its not heat
releated.

It could also be your RAM. Errors in the RAM can cause CTD with no error
messages. If u have any other memory try that out and see if the CTD still
happens

The MB came with ASUSProbe (man does that sound painful), that monitored the
CPU and MB temps and turned the fans on and off accordingly.  I thought heat
might be the issue.  But I looked at the temps in ASUSProbe after crashes
and they were well with in the parameters. However, I'll try overriding
ASUSProbe and see if that works.

Thanks for the help.

Just an FYI, don't put to much faith in ASUS PC Probe the best thing its
known for is being wrong. You gotta love how a BIOS flash can change the
tmps your system runs at.  I flashed the BIOS on my A7M266 and it started
reading 10 degress warmer.

What about the power supply?

I turned off ASUS PC Probe but still same issue.  I'm pretty sure it is the
RAM now.  There's a BIOS update that ASUS sez fixes compatibility issues
with some 333 RAM, maybe it will fix my 400.  Other wise back to the shop it
goes.

I found a little utility called Memtest86 that I'll run too and see if it
diagnoses any problem.  Ever heard of it?

Just to finsish this thread in case some one is doing a search on Google
later, it was the RAM.  Switched to Samsung PC 2700 and everything's OK now.
Serves me right for trying to cheap out on the DDR.  But I would advise
anyone trying to use DDR 400 to check the make and serial numbers with the
MB 'cause it seems to be alot of compatability issues out there right now.
