NASCAR2/SIerra WHY DOENST THEIR STUFF EVER WORK??

by AIR_TIM » Mon, 01 Sep 1997 04:00:00

I just got Nascar2 today, I installed it in win95 but the sound didnt work,
so I ran the soundsetup with every possible thing I could think of, that
didnt work....
Even the god damn patch wont install because it has errors in it.

WHY IS EVERY Sierra game so messed up?...perfect example is football pro
96, 97...

Can somone help me to get this game running? it sucks I just spent this
money and the dumb thing wont run and I cant take it back since its opened.

I have a Dell Pentium II 266
64mb EDO ram with ECC
Matrox Millenium II with 8mb WRAM
7gig HD
WIn95 revB
Yamaha 32 bit wavetable sound and altec lansing full dolby surrond sound
speakers.

Normaly every game works if I pick soundblaster...but not SIERRAS damn
games...no they never work.

First off, Mr. Air,

Take a look at your computer configuration and make sure that it's
right.  NASCAR 2 is native to DOS; you can set it up and launch it
through win95 but it's really running in DOS.  The video open is a
smacker file that uses your win95 configuration to playback.  But the
game itself needs to see proper DOS configurations in order to work
correctly.  That means your soundcard driver has to be setup to run
under DOS.  Your mouse driver also needs to be set up to run under DOS.
Unfortunately (why I don't know) most computer manufacturers don't
configure the machines that they sell to run in DOS.  Set up your
soundcard driver, CD ROM driver and mouse driver to run under DOS, and
you won't have any more problems with this game or most others.

God Bless,

Do you need any special drivers for you soundcard to activate it? I know nothing
about that Yamaha card but it sounds like it needs a driver in order to activate.

I haven't gotten the patch...

I don't know. But I found Nascar2 to be a pretty darn good game. I haven't had
any big problems with it. That is probably why I am not so hot to get the patch.

As I said in an earlier note I run the game in DOS. I setup a short cut which
contains all the Config.sys & Autoexec.bat info that people used to put on boot
floppies. This is all in the ADVANCED section of the shortcut properties. When
I click on the icon the system will reboot and play the game while loading all
the required DOS drivers (cdrom, mouse sound, smartdrive cache). When I am
done the computer will reboot back to Win95. One you get one of these shortcuts
working you can cut & paste to other shortcuts, so you really only need to do the
hard work once. A friend of mine makes a shortcut of this type to COMMAND.COM.
This will give a DOS window with all your drivers loaded. You can then go to the
proper directory & run your game.

Hope this helped...

I may have missed some instructions while installing Nascar II but I was
appalled at the way Sierra expects typical users to set up their audio.
IndyCar Racing II (an older game) did it correctly by doing it
automatically.  It is becoming obvious to me that Sierra / Papyrus is only
interested in doing a half-ass job (luckily the half that works is the race
engine).  For example: where is the Leguna Seca patch for ICRII?  I've read
there isn't going to be one.  I guess they figure It's always nice to have
your car disappear on the most difficult part of the track.

Anyway, on the off chance that you haven't tried this, here is how I set up
my Soundblaster AWE32.  I hope there is an easier way but I just went ahead
and did this out of habit.  I don't know how experienced you (or someone
else reading this) may be so I wrote it out step by step.  I hope it helps:

(1)  Right click on "My Computer" and select "Properties"
(2)  Select the "Device Manager" tab
(3)  Under "Sound, video, and game controllers" select your sound card
(4)  Hit the "Properties" button
(5)  Select the "Resources" tab and write down the Interrupt Request (IRQ),
Direct Memory Access (DMA), and Input/Output Range (Address) number(s).
(6)  Open up a MS-DOS prompt from the Start | Programs menu and change to
your Nascar II directory.  For example, I typed:  cd
C:\Progra~1\Sierra\Nascar2
(7)  Run the setup program by typing setup
(8)  Select the sound card you have or the one yours is compatible with.  I
selected Soundblaster 16 stereo
(9)  Match up the Address, IRQ and DMA numbers from those you wrote down
earlier.
(10)  Test the sound -- hopefully it works.

Don't buy it if u don't like it. I mean they are even nice enough to make
you a patch for the game. Also no one tell you to drive with that behind the
car view. If you want the game so realistic, use the incar cam.
