I used to race GPL online with my old 28.8 modem, and it worked fine. The
ISDN connection I have now work better though :)

  for joining a race, a good ol 33k modem is usually fine.  As long as
it isn't a Winmodem like most new systems come with.  Hosting is severly
limited by modems so your max number of drivers is much smaller.  But
games like gpl and N3 expect the joiner to be able to run well with a
56k modem.  That said, there are soooooo many varibles including how
your system is setup and the general unpredicability of the internet to
really gum things up.  Even my cable modem gets downright sluggish from
time to time.
