I think it's fantastic. A huge upgrade IMO.

You must not be running XP or had the chance to see it work...

Because it's faster, simpler and doesn't crash all the time?

The *only* problem I have with it is the GPL sound bug -- since I
finally got the voodoo drivers installed, everything is fine and
dandy.

I had all the resources I needed for XP long before I got the upgrade.
And I've yet to find any bugs other than the aforementioned GPL sound
bug -- every other program I have works fine -- in most cases much
better than they ran on ME or 98.

> XP is a resourse pig and is full of bugs,

Hmmm... that's a curious statement.  On my machine at least ( I don't
pretend to speak for anyone else) XP feels lighter & faster than Win98SE
did.  Nothing at all like ME was.  Your statement is very true where ME
is concerned however.

My better half instructed the store to install XP on our new PC without my knowledge...

But I've only had 2 problems with XP, and both stemmed from an apparent bug wherein XP doesn't
recognize or install USB drivers/devices.  I threw a PS/2 adapter on my Intellimouse Explorer, and
had to manually install a Windows XP driver before I could get the SB Audigy drivers upgrade to
install.  Everything's hunky dory now.  I've installed 4 high-end games on it, and it's only crashed
one time (and that was because I tried to alt/F4 out of a game and back in again).  Big improvement
over my old version of '98.

That's what I find too. Once you get rid of all the eye candy and just set
it to classic mode anyway. XP is a dynamic OS, it learns what programs you
use the most and optimizes the layout of the data on the tracks so that it
can be fetched quicker, that's why it feels faster when starting programs up
that you use a lot. MS says it takes a few days for it to optimize the
layout.

I have'nt had that problem with USB devices under XP. My printer is USB and
was installed with drivers by XP, same with any other USB device I have
attached so far (three game controllers). I was really impressed that it
came with drivers for my Epson 870 printer (usb).

Here's something to try: make a shortcut to the installation prog, and
then tell XP to run the target in a win98 or 2k compatability layer.

Also, I hope by upgrade you mean a fresh install of a newer OS, not an
actual upgrade.
