OT: Celeron replacement for P4??

by Mike Beaucham » Sat, 16 Nov 2002 19:06:54

Hey all..
Quite off topic indeed, but a general PC upgrading question. (maybe I'll
mention GPL somewhere) :)

I've been looking at DeskNotes (laptops that take regular PC stuff, but
without a battery) and I find them to be cheap as hell, and exactly what I
want.

Anyways, I can order one model from a friend that has a built in Celeron
1.2GHz processor.

Or, I can order another model, which seems quite better but as a barebones
system from another friend for a few hundred cheaper. It says it's for
Pentium4 processors. But, if I was to get that, to save money, I'd like to
put a CELERON 1.7GHz processor in it when I build it. Can I do that??

The webpage for the laptop says this:
Processor:
Intel Pentium 4 processor with 256KB on-die L2 cache on .18u process
technology
Speed at 1.4/1.5/1.6/1.7/1.8/1.9/2.0 GHz, Willamette core
 Intel Pentium 4 processor with 512KB on-die L2 cache on .13u process
technology
Speed at 2.0/2.2/2.4/2.6/2.8 GHz, Northwood core
Socket 478 for FC-PGA2 package, 400MHz system bus
http://www.racesimcentral.net/

Instead, I wanna put the Celeron Socket 478 - 400MHz FSB 1.7 GHz 128k cache
in there. Is this do-able?? Same socket, same FSB.

I found out what chipset the laptop uses, SiS 650 and it's listed on SiS's
site under Celeron/P4 but when I go to it's page, it just talks about P4
capatibility, and doesn't mention Celeron. But, I was always under the
impression that celeron was always the exact same as it's respective
pentium, just an error cpu that couldn't run at the desired speed and
relabelled as "celeron" and clocked down or just a smaller cache.

See, if so, I can build this system myself for about the same price my
friend can order the 1.2GHz Celeron system, but I'd have a 1.7GHz with a
better chipset, USB 2.0, firewire, 5.1 sound, DDR Ram, and the ability to
upgrade all the way to a P4 2.8GHz, etc. and I could put twice the Harddrive
in.

Hmmm.. any input on the whole celeron->p4 motherboard thing?

Celeron 478's are supposed to be interchangeable with P4 478's as you
say, but they're a fairly recent addition to the P4 lineup, so various
websites may not have updated their info yet, try looking at the BIOS
updates for this particular MoBo and see if they mention adding support
for the Celeron anywhere

Yes, it's doable. And as you mentioned, it gives you the possibility
to upgrade to P4 later.

BTW, those socket478 Celerons overclock like crazy... +500MHz
shouldn't be a problem at all =)

I can't find the specific MoBo Identification number, just the chipset.
However, I did find 3 bios updates, the latest being 02/04/11. There's
Reason Revisions, but none mention anything specific about Celeron processor
support, or adding it.
An interesting note, there's one update that says "Add OVER CLOCK
function"!! Excellent! :)

My take right now, is that.. I may as well spend a bit more to get a better
laptop anyways. This whole thing will only be costing me about $1500 CDN max
(under $1000 US?). So, even if the celeron doesn't work for some reason, I
can return it and spend $100 more on a P4. Not a HUGE deal I guess, but I
did want to keep cost down.

In the latest BIOS, there's a "OVER CLOCK FUNCTION"!! hahaha.. My PC doesn't
even have that.. and this is a DeskNote! hahaha..

To make this relevant, I have full intentions on running GPL on this thing,
and bringing headphones and my FF wheel into at least one class at school
and sit in the back! Probably should disable FF, so I don't distract any
students too much. :)

You REALLY don't want to do that...

Every performance report I've read on that class of Celeron has indicated
that it is an extremely poor performer. EXTREMELY poor.

Given the cost of P4 2Ghz processors these days, it doesn't make sense to
use that Celeron at all.

Oh, you said Laptop.  I wasn't preparred for that :)  When talking about
piecing things together systems, I don't usually think Laptop :)

Are there any websites that compare performance between the latest Celeron,
and the P4? I can't find anything specifically about them.. I'd be curious.
Afterall, this is just a laptop and I don't need top performance. I'm trying
to save a lot of money, and still retain upgradeability. That's why I want
to go for the P4 motherboard, but I'm trying to stick the celeron in for
now.

Not a big fan of this site, but numbers are numbers...most of the time
at least, should give you a rough idea
