I haven't used this facility though - I only got it because it reduces
the CPU overhead required to poll the gameport (as it's done on the card
rather than by the CPU) and it also gives a much smoother and more
stable reading.

You could try a switchbox but I've heard these are unreliable with
many devices like FF wheels/sticks or controllers with many buttons as
they only connect a subset of all the pins on the port.
Alternatively, consider getting a USB stick and you should have no
problems. I have a Sidewinder FF wheel on the joystick port, with
Precision Pro and Freestyle Pro USB sticks/pads. No problems with
having to unplug anything. Just make sure you assign the correct
controller to ID 1 since some games only work with controllers if they
have the ID 1 within the joystick properties. There is a small program
on CH products website that will let you easily set any controller to ID
1 (regardless of manufacturer).
