Online racing and yet another brilliant idea :o)???

The other day I was thinking on how we sim racers practice. Alone in front of
our computers. I remember back when I tried to be one of the best Tennis players
in the world. How fun it was to practice with other players.

Now, why not online practice? For those of us who is prepared to pay for the
connection time there could be a multiplayer practice session in the racing sim.
I suggest this would be best solved by ghost cars, thus collision detection is
off and we dont have to worry about pings being well over 1000 ms, because
you're not racing anyone else but yourself and your setups. It would be great to
develop setups together with other sim racing friends. Every time you got to the
pit to change your setup you're automatically also in the practice sessions chat
room, so you can discuss things like higher rear wing was a bad idea and more
front wing seemed to increase drag, etc... You could have session standings and
such to see who is going fastest or slowest or follow a drivers progress through
practice. You would probably also get some new sim racing friends on the way.

Don't count on it.  I bet the GPL will be on some on-line things like HEAT
or Kali.  Papyrus mainly focuses on NASCAR , NASCAR2.  Now it's all NASCAR2
on TEN.  Then later it is going to be all NASCAR3 on TEN.  It is just a
pattern I have seen since N1.

Not really.

As you may or may not know... many of us have official information since
months about Grand Prix Legends, and we can say as a fact that you won't
regret the multiplayer features.

It is time you forget the previous Papyrus titles and turn your head in
the ----> future.

Grand Prix Legends will support IPX, Modem/modem and TCP/IP multiplayer
racing.

For a good knowledge of how online racing will be, check out Allison's Hine

beta tester for GPL.  URL is :

I think it will be a huge mistake if they don't have a centralized or
standard place for everyone to go and participate/race.  Online Racing
isn't a place to have a gamespy/quake2 type of format.  Having
individual tcp/ip racing will be O.K at best.

Yes, I know N2 has practice online support, but for it work on Kali you must
have pings below 450 ms (I hardly get that to France sometimes and I'm in Sweden
:o( ) and on TEN you must pay extra money. I was thinking a solution where I
could practice with anyone on the planet, thus allowing pings over 1000 ms. A
ghost car solution very much like the ghost cars in F1RS, with collision
detection turned off, should solve the problem. You wouldn't need a server
either.

I would of course very much enjoy a practice session with you in GPL, Richard
:o), but I would also like to practice with my many sim racing friends from
Australia.
