I just downshift to 3rd going into every turn and back up to 4th on every
straight.

The way I do it, and the way most real Winston Cup drivers do, is to
shift to fourth gear just as you hit the start/finish line.  Downshift
to third at the entry to turn one; you won't need to upshift to fourth
again until you hit the start/finish line off of turn three.  In the
season I just completed, against 100% AI, damage on, realistic, I
finished 8th in the first race, won the second race there.
