Voodoo 5 - Yes or No

The V5 will do very little, if anything, to improve your framerate on
the grid. When I got my V5 I was getting roughly the same numbers you

Then I upgraded my CPU to a P3 700 and clocked it to 933. Now, the fps
counter never hits 30 at any time, even with 4X FSAA at 800X600. The
numbers on the grid are almost entirely CPU dependant.

The V5 will do wonders for visual quality with FSAA though, but that's
another story for another thread.

Voodoo 5 - Yes or No

Hi all,
Just a *** regarding the new Voodoo 5 5500 card. I currently have a PIII
600, 128mb RAM, 32mb Riva TNT2, 12mb V2 and was wondering whether an upgrade
to the V5 would provide any real significant improvement for my system
(mainly for GPL but with GP3 in mind as well...).

Currently using the D3D patch with a full field I get around 23-5 fps at the
back of a grid at Monza or Mosport which quickly shifts up to 36 once the
race is underway. I am running at 1024x768 and have Cars and Track in the
mirrors, all forward details on and only Track, Objects and Cars textures in
the mirrors. The LOD Bias is set under the I of Bias.

Would this be considered fairly usual for the type of system I am running or
should I be getting more at the start. How much of an improvement would the
V5 afford me.

Many thanks for your comments.

Actually it might not be.... I mean FPS is king with racing game right? So
when were looking at 32 and now 64 meg cards, FPS on older games like GPL,
and even newer ones like NFS HS or NFS PU, Nascar 3, RC2000,  F1-2K, etc
shouldn't be much of an issue.

Now were looking at high quality visuals that first person shooters are
accustomed to... The question is can we expect awesome graphics AND still
keep our FPS up?

Speaking of FSAA has anyone given a GeForce II GTS 64 meg card a run with
the latest 5.30 Nvidia drivers, on GPL, RC2000, F12K, etc????? How does the
FPS suffer when it's 4x enabled?

V5 5500 will improve the grid.  I was getting 24 fps on the grid at Monza
with all details on and max with my V3 3000.  Now with a V5 and the D3D
patch I'm getting 31 fps on the grid with 4x FSAA.  Visually 4xFSAA is
amazing, just not the same without it.  I can't go back.

It will help a lot for sure, I have a similair system as yours but I use a
V3 and that gives me about 30 fps at the start at Monza (using Glide).  You
could wait until GP3 comes out and then decide what to buy. If GP3 works
fine on my system you might just buy a V3, which is great with GPL. And
otherwise you buy the V5.
