Had USB only wheels for over 2 years now and no problems at all.

Saw IL-2 Sturmovik demo and d/l it.

Plugged in my 3 year old but never used joystick,PC Phantom Logic 3 with
throttle, but in *** Options it is described as Not Connected even though
it obviously is.

No drivers came with the wheel.so i think Microsoft Gameport joystick should
suffice.

Any ideas what is wrong guys...?

I had the same problem with adding gameport pedals.
Had to remove both other USB devices (wheel and joystick) in Gameing
Options and then configure gameport device.
Keep the gameport device as device 01. As soon as i change to something
else it shows up as Not Connected again.

Good luck

Make sure your gameport is installed properly and working in Device
Manager. See if you can find any drivers on the web, they may have put
some out since you bought it.

And all the things the other guy said as well :)
