Error with N2 Sierra Product Auto Update

by Mark » Mon, 06 Jan 1997 04:00:00

I start up sierra auto update and start up the updating proccess. Then it
will find something and in a dialog it said. "We have determined that you
will need to update this utility to continue. This will only take a
moment." I hit Ok and it starts downloading everything and finishes the
download for the 162355 byte program. On my task manu I see MS-DOS Prompt,
but I didn't toch it yet. When it is finished downloading I hit continue
like it tells me to do. Then the program closes and doesn't do anything.
The Dos Prompt is still there so I click on it. It closes imediatly. The
program never did anything because I re-ran the program and the same thing
happened for the 10 more time I re-done the program. Any help Is
apprechiated. Please contack me by E-Mail at

no idea please post the update file by E-Mail or in the Biniares version
newsgroup.

                        Sincerly,
                        Mark

After reading this post, I went back and tried again for the ump***th
time. It failed again but on the second try it worked. Here is the
update information I received.

NASCAR Racing 2 Update
Decemeber 16, 1996

The following will update the System file WinInet.dll in the Windows
System folder. This file is used both by Auto Update and IE3.01
(Microsoft) and
is needed to keep both applications compatible. If you have experienced
problems
using IE3.01 after installing NASCAR Racing 2, this will correct the
problem.

Since this file is in use while using Auto Update, you will need to
reboot your
system after updating is complete for changes to go into effect.

If you continue to experience problems, or if you have any questions
concerning any of the above steps, our Technical Support Team will be
happy to assist you.  Please call (206) 644-4343 between 8:15 a.m.
and 4:45 p.m., Pacific Standard Time, Monday through Friday.  We can be
reached by Fax at (206) 644-7697, or by mail at the following address:

                                Mark

:P.S. Does anyone know where the Sierra Auto update program stores the
:update files as a temp directory?

Try windows\temp

Suggestion:

It appears as though SIERRA did not account for a dual boot
DOS6.x/WIN95 setup in its upgrade process...  If that is what you
have, you can still install the patch manually by retrieving the
contents of your windows/temp directory (assuming you aborted the
update before reboot) and analyzing the autoexec.app file placed in
your root directory.  It took me several tries, but I did finally
succeed once I realized what the problem was...  [look closely at the
Call line in the autoexec.app...  Win95 won't well with a DOS6.x
command interpreter...]

I hope this helps.  It worked for me, but it wasn't easy.
