GPLRank feature update?

by Imar de Vrie » Fri, 05 Jan 2001 00:20:42

Hi,

first of all I'd like to say that I think GPLRank is a huge help in
making me feel good about my racing achievements. Instead of comparing
my laptimes to the almost unbelievable Huttu times, I have several
options of comparing my times to fellow Dutch drivers, or fellow Ferrari
drivers.

Unfortunately, when viewing handicaps driven with a specific chassis
(using Multiple Choice Hell), it's not possible to view all laptimes
from a selected driver with the specific chassis. What I mean is, when I
choose to view the handicaps from Ferrari drivers from The Netherlands,
and then select one of those drivers to do a B2B with, I get a B2B with
that driver's *best* laptimes, not his laptimes driven with a Ferrari.

I know I can then look up the driver's username, select 'Their best
laps', and then search for the Ferrari laptimes, but it would be a lot
easier if it worked directly through using MCH, and specify a chassis.

Is it at all possible to implement such a feature? Has this been
discussed before?

Thanks in advance.

Let me add a second question.  Is it possible to easily change 107% so
you could click on someone whose 107% rank is close and get a back to
back?

Thanks for the suggestions. It's probably technically posible to make both of
these changes, but I would say that since all the information your both looking
for is already easily accessed with a couple mouse clicks, it doesn't merit
adding a new feature.

I honestly don't get this.  In the 107% ranking, all I get is a list
of names.  All I can see to do is to highlight the name, copy the
name, go back to the home page, go to the driver search page, paste
the name, search the driver database and then click the handicap.  For
one driver this is OK, but it's a pain for several.  For an example of
what I'd like, in multiple choice hell the handicaps are clickable and
I can merrily click those close to me one after another.  Is there an
easier way to do what I want that I'm missing?

Note that I'm -not- ragging on you and can accept no as an answer.  I
will never criticize how GPL rank is run, because you guys are heroes
to me.

Ok, maybe I was exaggerating a bit with "a couple mouse clicks" ;-).
The WR and Papy Benchmark 107% features, were added as an interesting
bit of information, but were not meant to be as fully functional as
the lists using the main rank number. There was a lot of debate when
GPLRank started, on if it should be based on the current
system(SubZero scale), or if it should be based on percentages, and
the current system won out. I personally think the GPLRank number is
a better way to compare yourself rather than percentages, but not
everyone agrees. I personally think it would muddy the waters of
GPLRank to put as much emphasis on percentages as on the main ranking
numbers.

I understand your point, and politely renew my request you put
this change on a list of things to be considered for future updates to
the program.

For us high handicappers the progressive rewards of trying for
107% track by track make this a more useful motivational goal than
going negative.  In other words, we can improve, get to 107% at Monza
(1:32), then go for it at the Glen (1:07), then Spa (3:25), then....
Going negative is just too remote for a lot of us to be truly
motivating.

I would hope that you could see the value and support those of
us mucking around in the bottom half of the rankings  (ie handicap
greater than +65), but still serious about GPL and wanting to improve.
Thanks.

I see that you have done exactly what I was asking for.  I'm
floored.  Thanks very much.  The people involved with GPL Rank are the
friendliest and most responsive I've ever seen.

This *is* friendly and responsive... Now if only the chassis comparison
could be implemented :)

I can imagine a lot of people asking for features to be added, and that
some of those requests are easier to implement than others, though. I
completely understand if this is the case with the chassis comparison :)

Thanks anyway for taking time to respond.

damn...I guess they had to put MY request on a back burner to finish
yours...hmmmm guess I'll have to wait for the ol "everyone whose faster than
me gets 1000 seconds added" patch.
