F1-2000 Full Season?

by Klin » Sat, 22 Apr 2000 04:00:00

So how many have put up with the annoyances to slog through a full
Championship season in F1 2000?

The only way I could tolerate it was to lower the AI to 90%, raise the race
length to 25%, and keep my car invulnerable. Then after the inevitable
Son-Of-Surtees took me out in the first corner, I would have a chance to
recover and fight for the lead by the end of the race. The only time I got
through the first complex of corners cleanly (Spain), I ended up lapping the
field.

And speaking of lapping backmarkers... could someone please tell them to
just hold their line!!! I've been wiped out several times by idiots suddenly
veering one way or another just as I pull out to pass. When they pull over
well before I get to them and they stay over, fine. But then they usually do
something stupid like close the door on you. Arrgh. Coultard seemed to do
that to me a lot - I thought he and Jacques were pals...

While the in-car radio chatter is pretty inane ("Stay on the track - you'll
do better that way." Gee I woulda' never thought of that!), the commentary
between races sometimes was very good. Starting one event after a previous
dismal one, the narrator correctly said that I was still leading the
Championship, despite failing to pick up any points in Imola. (What can I
say - multiple Son-Of-Surtees in that one.) Going into another race later in
the season, he said that I had to place just 5th or better to clinch the
Championship.

As others have also mentioned, I think the front tires look, ummm, odd to
say the least. But I found I had to play from the 'bumper cam' anyway to get
halfway decent frame rates. That viewpoint is a little low and it's hard to
pick out apexes. I hope I can find or make a replacement higher viewpoint
camera.

Despite the annoyances, F1 2000 is staying on the ol' hard drive. I'll bet
with a bit of tweaking by those hard-working folks who improved SCGT, as
well as others, it'll be my favorite racing game. Yeah, yeah, I enjoy GPL
immensely even though I'm not very fast, but I like being immersed in the
current season.

According to an interview on www.easports.com the AI is all the same.
Just the car performance is different. Also the reason all the cars the
human drives is equal is to give the human a chance if they drive for
a backmarker team. I am dissapointed in this, as I think it would be
a good handycap. It was a good read, anyone interested in F1 2000
should check it out.

You should never play F12K at anything less than AI at 100%. 120% is even
better. When you use levels, most of the problems you describe are not
there.

I've been playing at 100% since almost day one.  Generally they do seem to
make it through the first turn without as many accidents.  Unless I'm up front
in which case my inevitable slow starts can result in backenders.

But they still do the weaving at 100%.  Its just that you don't catch em as
often so you see it less :-)

I tried starting many Championships at 100%. Because there is so much of a
frame rate problem in the first corner, I tended to back off a bit since I
can't predict where the cars around me will suddenly appear after braking
and turning in. Since I backed off a bit, I got rear-ended. I've tried
turning off or minimizing as many graphical features as possible and the
frame rate was noticably better, but still not good enough that I could
confidently stay in close contact with a car beside me or ahead of me going
into a turn.

Maybe this will turn out to be a really nice sim once I have a P3 2000 with
a Voodoo8. Sigh.

You've already got a P3 2000 and Voodoo 8 ?
No, then how can you say it will be sluggish ?
