Problem is, Penske *doesn't* own it anymore. He sold off his track company to
ISC aka the track owning arm of NASCAR.
Another problem is, if Gil & Dario hadn't got together it would have been
another boring Nazareth race. It's about time a bulldozer gets taken to that
track an reconfigured into a wider more race friendly track. A 3/4/5/6/7
(depends on who you talk to) turn 1 mile 'oval' just doesn't produce good
racing. Today I watched the race on TV (I was at the track - btw did anyone
else notice that Brack's engine was way 'quieter' than the others?) and throught
the first half I was totally bored. It wasn't really and exciting race until it
came down to the question of could race winner Scott Dixon make it on fuel and
hold off Brack? Last year if the caution hadn't come out at the precise wrong
time, we wouldn't have been treated to Montoya rocketing up the rundown passing
like a daemon possesed (or like Kenny yesterday!). That's kinda the reputation
that the Naz has and it needs a facelift to shake.
While CART shouldn't turn it's back on the northeast (Pocono with it's new
surface would be excellent racing), someone has to come up with another good
venue for CART. And not another damn road course.
As to the Andretti ambassadorship, well, it won't be long before you can say
"Hey, there's Mario!" and some new fan will be saying "Mario who? Oh, Michael's
Dad." Those of us who have been around are very aware of his contributions to
the sport. Michael hasn't really been someone I'd particularly want as an
ambassador. His ego tends to get in the way. They can plead all they like and
drum up some support by doing so, but I doubt it will be enough to change the
collective minds of CART where they look at things like the 'bottom line' with
increasing fascination.
I blame two bodies for the decline in big time open wheel racing: CART for
getting way too involved in road courses and Tony George for sticking with an
increasingly incompetent USAC (although he eventually had to give them the
boot).
As to the petition to keep the race in Nazareth, well, I might have been born
there, but I couldn't sign and wouldn't until they fix the track itself.
