frustration! Help a poor newbie?

I've only within the past few days become interested in auto sims.  So
far it's been a frustrating experience, and I'm hoping some kind soul
might have pity on a newbie and offer some advice.  I've spent a
considerable time reading archives of this group, but I still have
some problems.

First the system info stuff:
   System 1: Athlon 1.2, 512 Mb, Win98 (dual boot w/ Mandrake Linux),
GeForce3

   System 2: Celeron 433, 128 Mb, GeForce3, Win2K (dual boot w/
Mandrake)

Common HW: Logitech force feedback wheel

I first bought NFS:PU, which runs great on the Win98 box, but I
quickly found it more arcadish than anything, and I'm really after a
more serious simulator.  So I poked around in dej^h^h^hGoogle's usenet
archives, and discovered some people saying good things about F1 2001,
so I got that.

Now, it *looks* like pretty much what I'm after - a more serious
simulator with expansion possibilities.  But heck if I can get it
working on either machine.  I've downloaded the most recent patch I
could find, and I'm running the latest nVidia drivers as of yesterday,
with DX 8.1, but I still have these problems:

  * On system 1, the actual framerate is fine, but the graphics are
"jerky" - it's hard to explain exactly, but it is quite unplayable.
The machine far exceeds the min specs on the box, and it runs
everything else fine (including some heavy 3D stuff like Fly2,
MSFS2K2, etc etc).  It just stutters way too much to be playable,
despite running at 40+ FPS.

  * On system 2, which also runs most 3D just fine (albeit slower),
the game runs up until the point where I would get to drive, and then
immediately dumps back out to the 2D menus, or sometimes just hangs
the system entirely.

After failing to get both machines working, I poked around in Google
and found some advice from this group saying to try running in
windowed mode.  I did, and no difference at all on either machine.
I've also tried running with FRAPS, which also changes nothing :-(

I've checked that the 3D card is not sharing an IRQ with anything else
on the system.  I'm not sure what else to do, but at the moment I'm
basically out $19 for a nonfunctional game.

I'm willing to just eat this cost and move to something else, *if* I
can find something else to move to!  But it seems difficult.  Here's
what I'm after - recommendations are most welcome.

  * A sim, not an arcade game.  Physics as real as possible, etc.

  * I could not possibly be less interested in NASCAR :-).

  * I'm after modern era cars.

  * Eye and ear candy is good.

  * Something with decent expansion potential is a bonus.

Help please??  Either advice on getting F1 2001 running, or on
something to replace it with, would be swell :-)

You could at least try N2002 and GLP! Failing that, you'll have to wait
for WSC. Sorry I can't help you with F1 2001.

Have you turned off D3D v-sync? (You should only have it on if your frame
rate is consistently higher than your refresh rate)  Are you running with
the developer patches (1.0.7.X) ?  Got 192MB+ RAM?

A friend of mine has an Athlon 1.4 and a GF3 and he gets around 70-80fps and
it's very smooth.  I had a problem with my Logitech wheel slowing down the
game under WinXP - you could try disconnecting your wheel and playing with
the keyboard to see if that's where the problem lies.  You could also try
disabling your sound card to see if there's a problem with the Audigy
drivers.  Basically just a case of mucking around, but you really shouldn't
be having any slow-down at all with those system specs.

I agree.  By disregarding N2002 and GPL you are denying yourself some
serious fun - especially online.  The NASCAR series by Papy is what
got me into NASCAR in the first place.
Even if you're not an oval fan, Watkins Glen is hugely enjoyable and
worth the price of entry alone.  I've hardly touched the other tracks
in N2K2, spent hours at the Glen and still need to find another 1.5 -
2 secs.  Very challenging, very rewarding, and most of all, fun.  I
find Sears Point a nightmare...
GPL, with the ludicrous number of tracks floating about is something
that you -have- to try.

True, which is why they are both still on my hard drive, and F1 2001 is
back at the shop.

Tried F12K demo, didn't get on with it -at all-  Plus it ran like a dog on
my (very)old setup.  Never got to trying the sequel.  Is there a demo?

In my experience, Papy are sim kings, but that doesn't mean I don't want
someone else trying to take their crown.

I was just going to post that!  I'm starting to believe your parallel

No demo...but other than the same basic look of the UI and same general
style of graphics...there isn't much between 2000 and 2001 that are the
same.  Especially after the patch, with FF, it is mucho better.  Still there
are plenty of users here who have NOT liked it.  Everyone has different
tastes and expectations.

True.  I must admit that I thought people in this group were crazy when they
were getting e***d about F12K1.  It was only once the first patch came out
and I saw it being played on a GF3 that I gave it a chance.  Then after
discovering just how good the physics and graphics engines were, things like
dodgy menus paled into insignificance.  It's the king of offline racing
that's for sure, but the papy guys still rule the online arena.
