3D Sounds In N3...!!!

Let's get this straight......lots of confusion in the "posts" below:

The "reflections" toggle on the N3 Sounds option screen is for the "reflections"
feature of the MX300 sound card (and a few others...but it is the most popular).
Regardless of whether you have this enabled or not (it will only be available to
MX300 card users....SB Live users - or any other sound card - this will be
grayed out).

In either case....3D sound will be implemented in N3 automatically.  That's true
for both the MX300 and the SB Live sound cards.  In the case of the SB Live
cards.....you don't have to do a thing to turn it on.....it's turned on
automatically!  The "reflections" feature is one I frankly don't like....adds
too much reverb type quality to the overall sound....but that's on my
system....and subjective to my tastes.  You can try it....on/off.....decide for
yourself with your sound system.  In general......the smaller watt pc desktop
type speakers...with/without subwoofers will benefit from the "reflections"
being turned on.....and the bigger watt speakers like surround sound and home
theater systems will not benefit...in fact...they will not sound as good.  That
is assuming you have all the settings for your sound system set to "optimize"
your system.

If you don't know how to do this......go to the High Gear
website.....(www.simracingnews.com) and see the Crew Chief's Notebook section
for a complete "white paper" almost on setting up your sound systems to run
NASCAR 3.

Tom,

Would "reflections" be what causes my speakers/headphones to sound like
they're gonna blow up at the start of a race?  It seems fine all the other
times - except for that Sierra Sports intro thing - that will wake up the
kids every time if you're not ready for it <g>

I'm wondering if I should return my MX300 or keep my SB Live.  I like having
A3D, but I'm not sure what the standard is at this point...

If I were you, I'd keep the MX300, mostly because of its ability to do just
the type of sound "reflections" that are in N3.  This is something that, if
I understand correctly, is beyond the capability of EAX and the SBLive.

I use headphones with my MX300 (my apartment is not big enough for a good
4ps. :(  and the reflections sound awesome!  I am almost more impressed with
that feature of the MX than the A3d. :)

David.....

The "sound blossoming" that's what its called.....is a problem for N2, N99 and
now N3.  I suspect it is the same on both the SB Live and the MX300.

What I've done as a temp work around.......set all my sound settings for racing
on the track.....then turn my master amp volume setting way down while in the
pits (start of practice...and in the pace laps).  This means of course, you have
to have it near your racing setup.

That's the best solution for now......and no...don't trade in your MX300 for an
SB Live....

Here's one for you Tom. What if you have a 3D sound card but only have two
speakers?  If N3 automatically turns on 3D sound upon detection of a DS3D
card, then I assume it's doing some front to rear fading and messing with
my front channel when it, in my case, it shouldn't.  Comments?

Bill.....

Good point.  And thanks for mentioning it......it brings up a mistake made by
several SB Live card users....I made it too at first.

Your characterization of the  SB Live sending discrete sounds to the front
speakers and the rear speakers is correct.  If you only have front speakers
attached....then they are not receiving the "full signal" from the card.

But.....that is why there is a "two speaker" setting in the SB Live.  That
setting will disengage the discrete "surround" sound signal and allow the sounds
to be distributed to two speakers (fronts) in standard stereo separation.

Hope that clarifies....and helps you?

I've had my Live! set for two speakers since the day I installed it.
However, I never knew (until now) if that actually effected the sound mix
or simply chopped off the rear channel.  Now I know.  Thanks.

The Aureal drivers!  Get them from VOS, David has already edited the
inf file for a painless install.  (Don't ask me what that means, just
read it on the soundcard news group.) :-)

I have a SB64PCI (Ensoniq AudioPCI) and it will synthesize
surround sound with 2 speakers or 4. Also and game which
uses DirectSound3D (like F1RS) will produce a very nice
3D sound effect with this card. Does anyone know if N3 uses
DirectSound3D?
