Force feedback without pedals?

by Luis Sot » Sun, 16 Jan 2000 04:00:00

Does anyone know of a force feedback wheel that can either be used WITHOUT
the pedals or that can be modified to NOT have pedals?  So many people seem
to be unhappy with most of the pedals included with these things, and I can
see why...

This could be useful for people who, like myself, like to play flight sims
as well, and are very happy with their CH pedals, and others who I know
can't or would rather not use the pedals, for X or Y reason.  I currently
run the GP1 wheel from Thrustmaster and the CH pedals, with a Saitek stick &
throttle combo for flying.  The ideal rig for me would be a USB FF wheel
without pedals (preferrably like the Logitech), and then be able to use the
CH pedals for gas and brake (and rudder for flying, of course), connected
thru the standard game port.  I'd keep the Saitek where it is, as I already
have a USB port busy with a MS Sidewinder game controller.

...I guess I just want to have my cake and eat it, too!

Any help would be appreciated, and I hope this helps to inspire some ideas.

The new Guillemot Ferrari wheel has a built-in "redundant" set of pedals as
levers behind the steering wheel.  If you unplug the main pedals, then these
paddles take over as the pedals.  It also has F1-style paddle shifters.  (I
don't even want to think about trying to drive with the pedal paddles and
the shifter paddles at the same time!!!!)  This is the only wheel that I
know of that has what you want out of the box.  Too bad it is hard to find,
plagued with reliability concerns and has a few questionable design
features.  Overall it is great looking, very sturdy, not over-priced, has a
real shifter, too...

It's like it is 110% of what we would all want for 90% of the price, but the
widely reported weak FFB problems, steering resolution problems, steering
calibration problems suggest much caution!!!

I still haven't decided whether I can keep mine (it may be ultimately
unsuitable for GPL and N3/NL).

Louis,

You can have your cake and eat it too :))  You can have the FF wheel and
use CH pedals at the same time.  I have the Logitech FF plugged into USB
port and use TM Pro pedals (highly modified) plugged into the game port.
GPL allows you to assign controls from multiple devices.
