Which Momo?

by rcmr » Mon, 24 Nov 2003 12:26:40

I am planning on buying a Logitech Momo force feedback wheel, but I am
trying to decide between which Momo wheel.  The Logitech web site does
not give very detailed information to decide between the two.

The Momo Force is red, has paddle shifters, and costs more
The Momo Racing Force is black and has a stick shift

I assume the red one is better to justify the cost difference, but I
was wondering if there is any significant technical or functional
differences between the two.

I would appreciate any information you could provide to help me
choose.

I just recently got the momo racing setup.  Before I had a well used (many
times rebuilt) thrustmaster nascar pro.  I am just now getting my games fine
tuned for the force feedback but enjoying setup alot.  I paid 80 dollars for
mine and feel very good investment.  To me the stick shift was important.
More plastic on the racing wheel but still well built I feel.

The Red Force has a superior Wheel and Mechanics, but the pedals are, well,
terrible.

The Black force, from what I hear, has much much better pedals, but they
went 5 steps backwards on the wheel quality/mechanics.  Or so I've read.

There are still MSFF Wheels out there for around $80 (and that's regular
price).  It's an extremely durable wheel, and it works just fine.  Until MS
killed off it's SideWinder department, it was the #1 selling wheel (ain't
that odd).

Mine is going on 3 or 4 years old now (I've lost track) and the only issue
I've had is the left shifter button is starting to miss a beat every now and
then.  That just started about 6 months ago, and if I ever get time I'll
just tear it apart and clean it.

I'm waiting for a blow-out sale at Best Buy or something on these and I'll
pick up one or two myself.

Things have gotten _awfully_ quite about Act Labs lately, and that can't be
a good thing.

I would have to agree, the MS Sidewinder FF wheel is a very good wheel for
the price, and if you can pick them up cheap they are very well worth the
price.
Although lately I have been using my original Momo Leather wheel with the MS
pedals, the MS wheel is pretty darn good as well.

The cheaper MOMO racing has paddle shifters as well as a stick shift.  The
construction is mainly tough plastic as opposed to the steel bearing in the
MOMO force.  The pedals are far superior on the cheaper wheel and
surprisingly the *** wheel feels way better than the leather wheel.  The
only reason to buy the more expensive MOMO is if you drive like a gorilla.

I wont bash the Momo racing wheel but I had one and after the third right
paddle shifter went kaput I opted for the Momo Force.  I cant comment on the
pedals as I use the Act Labs perf pedals.  The overall feel/smoothness of
the Force is far superior to the racing.  That said the effects seem
stronger and a touch more realistic on the racing than the force.   I really
like the Momo Force and recommend it over the Momo racing any time price
isnt the issue.

red=force
black=racing

I found an article that had the detailed comparison I wanted at
http://www.racesimcentral.net/

Based on the photos included in the in depth review, the Force gear
mechanism appears more robust.  I'm buying the red one.

Thanks all for your comments.

I do too but only for highly aggressive drivers.  I think after breaking 3
shifters you would definitely fall into that category....The smoothness
feels much the same to me after the wheels are worn in - they're both a bit
stiff when new.  The optical system in the racing is more precise and would
probably last longer than the pot in the force.  I would also find it
difficult to recommend the force to anyone intending to use the pedals.

Actually Im quite easy on my hardware.  There was a known design defect
which may or may not have been corrected in subsequent production runs.  The
three defective wheels I mentioned all broke within a month shortly after
the release of the racing wheel.

I agree about the pedals even though I never used em.  The extra pivot just
kinda ruined em.  Give me a roller wheel like my old T1 any day.  The racing
pedals arent all that much better either.

I got me a spare MS FF, for I think 68 bucks at Amazon.com.

funny... but after wasting the money, I realized that I will only need a
backup one, if the house catches on fire, or something...  :)  This one has
been running great for about 2 years, and I got it used from ebay.

Logitech, the 'force' one is Force Feedback,  is the 'racing' also force
feedback??

Yes the racing does have FF.  In fact maybe just a little better FF feel
than the Force but thats subjective.
