Another GP3 preview!

It also has some previous released screenies, but at huge, as sharp as
they'll get, 1024x768 resolution. And a 6 minute movie of their trip to the
Hasbro studio's. (not really woth the download, as it contains more footage
of the airport and the food in the plane and at Hasbro than gameplay
footage. <g>)

It's in dutch, so I'll try to translate the best - worst parts:

...graphics look amazing exept for the pitcrew, when they let the car go,
they move away from the screen in South-Park style: they just slide away
sideways...
...the only things they have to do is solve some bugs, make support the MSFF
wheel, and finish weather effects. When it starts raining now it all comes
very sudden, one moment you're bathing in the sun, the other moment storm
breaks loose. They will fix that in the final version....
They are also fixing the pop-up of the trees in Hockenheim. According to
Microprose that are just little bugs that will besolved in no-time.
... The reviewer noticed a bug when he entered the pits in Spa. The colours
where all freaky and he was driving under the track for a moment. The
developers where aware of that and would fix it.
...The fun part is that a total newbie can get in and drive thanks to the
driving aids....
...The developers thought that the car in the rain had too little grip,
because whenever you blip the throttle the spins in no time. When the Arrows
driver tested it they found the level of grip was just right. That's when I
realised how insane F1 drivers where...
There will be a multiplayer option, but only up to 4 player on a
LAN-network.
There will be no radio-messages during a race, something that gets down the
realism.
Anyway, GP3 will still be a bestseller.
...I was still impressed by the gameplay, especially by my triple
summersault I managed to make. When I crashed hard at Monza my car just
broke in 2. one time I hit another car. His wing broke and landed on the
track, other cars ran into it and ended up in the graveltrap. I honestly
never saw realistic crashes like this before.
I'm no F1 fan but I need this game. To all F1-fans, if you have a PC, wait a
month or 2 to buy a F1-game, they don't get any better than GP3. And if you
don't have a PC, buy one. GP3 is worth it.

Is it me or does the blue car in this screenshot
http://www.spelletjesgarnaal.be/previews/gp3deel2/images/pic_f.jpg look like it's
about a foot off the ground?

It does.... that's because no shadow is drawn below the car yet.

Now thats something I`ve been waiting for....

Debris from other cars, that can will do you damage if you do not avoid
driving into it.

Most (all?) games that I currently play, you can drive straight through
debris without a scratch.

<snip>

Thanks this finally proves my point I was saying to myself : GP3 has yet to
give us a real 3d-accelerated picture!!!  All of them have a section
non-accelerated.  Sometimes it's armco, or the car graphics or trees, or
it's the grass (that's obvious).  It's obvious that the grass on the left
side of the screen in this next URL is not accelerated, while the tarmac is.
So is Gp3 really full-3d? What's Crammond trying to do?  Why are some
textures using anti-aliasing (or any other kind of blending method) while
other parts of the game engine aren't?

http://www.spelletjesgarnaal.be/previews/gp3deel2/images/pic_g.jpg  Grass on
the left

http://www.spelletjesgarnaal.be/previews/gp3deel2/images/pic_i.jpg  About
everything is made of pixels non-blended here! Except the wheels?

At least the track accuracy looks very, very good ;)

Looks like they dont have car shadows working yet, that should make it look
right.

Maybe they just blended those parts with Paintshop to give it a
3D-accelerated look.

Is it possible that the lack of speed makes them look less blended than they
are when moving?

just because they aren't filtered doesn't mean they are not accelerated -
you can of course have 3D Acceleration without filtering.

The car is on the track, but it has no shadow.  I wonder if that's because
the track has a shadow map on it (from the trees, faked of course, as in all
games) at this point and the game can't add two shadow maps to the same
piece of track.
Simon Brow

Don't confuse 3d acceleration with filtering.  Just because a texture
doesn't include filtering it doesn't mean it hasn't been drawn by a 3d
accelerator card.  Plenty of other games deliberately leave bilinear
filtering off certain objects because it gives a better overall look.
Filtering automatically reduces the intensity of all colours by around
10-15% so it can ruin the impression of an object being in bright sunlight,
and we all know how bright the colours in F1 are at times.
It's up to the programmer whether he wants filtering on a particular object,
it isn't compulsory.  It can be switched on and off from one polygon to the
next in D3D.
It's clear on the first shot you linked to that there is filtering on the
track, but not on the grass, so it's possible that this is how the final
game will look, and Geoff has done this deliberately because he didn't like
the faded look that filtering was giving on most objects (for comparison,
see the colours in F1 2000).
