GPL's got hold of me again

by oz » Wed, 07 Mar 2001 20:51:40

once upon a time I bought Gpl  and played it a fair bit , but then other
games came out with more eye candy etc. etc.

Mean while ive upgraded about 5 times

so the other week i decided I'll just go for a tootle around monza for old
times sake...

and all of a sudden Its got me again(damn) wrestling with that damn thing on
every bend.......amazing physics

still around the 1.32 -1.33... but ive just got to get Lesmos mastered again
and i'll be on 1.29s I hope!!!

The m***of this story is Dont put GPL on the shelf just because its old...
its got to be one of the most(sorry THE MOST) ***ive and involving racing
sims ever made!

GPL's got hold of me again

After reading all the posts here about GPL, I downloaded the demo, this game
rocks. I was never able to run the game as I never had the computer, until
recently, man have I missed out.  This game was hard to find, as even
Sierra-Online has removed it from there store What kind of lap times do you
run at Watkins Glenn?  I was checking out a site they claim to be running in
the high 1:03's, I'm not ever close to those speeds.
Regards,

While there ARE people (aka "aliens") out there who can run 1:03's and
1:04's, if you can get under 1:07 consistently you'll do very well on-line.
Pole at many on-line races is high 1:05's or low 1:06's. You'll probably
find you'll get to 1:10 relatively quickly, then the next 3 seconds take a
lot of work.

Ah GPL. So beautiful...and yet so deadly :-)

Those 1:03s at the Glen are real and real impossible to achieve. I've
had the game a year and although I've taken some extended vacations
I've put in a fair number of hours, the best i can do at the Glen is a
bit under 1:06 but in a race it's mostly high 1:06s and 1:30s (no
explanation needed for those).

I haven't experimented with setups yet, just using the setups that were used
with the car, I have been using the Lotus.  I was running 1:19's and thought
I was fast as the car felt real good and easy to control, I best get more
practice and push the car harder.

Well "jaf" after you put in a couple 1000 hours like many have done
{yea me too} then you will just start to appreciate GPL. No BS <g>.
Also if/when you get GPL get all the addons etc... Then you will be
really amazed!!! Cheers Thom_j.

I agree - you don't need to fiddle with the setup for a long time yet:
personally I have never fiddled with the setups at all, apart from trying
some hotlapper setups (I try to find ones that are driveable, rather than
the fastest).

The default setups in version 1.2 are pretty good: just reduce the fuel to
an appropriate level and you should be able to get into the 1:07s just by
practising (a lot!).

I think it's possible to get into the 1:05s with the default Lotus setup,
although by that stage it will be easier to switch to a faster setup (if you
can control it!).

Wouldn't be without Alison's setups - she explains why on her page:
