GPL System Questions

by Tony Jon » Mon, 01 May 2000 04:00:00

Hello:

 I have the following system:

  Pentium Pro 180/256K cache
Diamond Stealth II S220 4Meg Vid Card
  64Megs of RAM

I'm interested in GPL, but was wondering what I could expect on the
above system. Will I get a decent frame rate without having to turn
off alot of the graphics options? I wouldn't mind running it at
640x480 too much as long as I don't have to turn the graphics way
down.

I really don't want to buy GPL and then have to turn off most of the
featuers/etc. In other words...I still want it to look good. :-)

Anyone experienced GPL on a system like this or have any feedback?
Would be appreciated.

Thanks,

  Tony.

you'll be able to run it, but most of the graphics will have to be
turned off.  Solo you should be able to handle the road, walls, and
horizon, but online you might have to cut even the hills out...
Your card will work fine...just the whole system is a little
underpowred for GPL

I'm amazed people are so reluctant to buy GPL.  Doesn't it only cost $14.99
(9.99) or something? ;)
Anyway, your main problem is that video card (It doesn't sound like a 3dfx
card).  You may get GPL to run with the OpenGL beta2 patch from www.papy.com
but it won't be very fast.
Give some serious consideration to replacing your video card with a Voodoo 3
2000 or 3000.  Even with a V3 you wouldn't get good frame rates in races
(because of the Pro 180), but you would be able to play the game.
What GPL really needs is a 400-500 MHz P2/P3/Athlon along with a Voodoo
2/3/4/5.  Almost all new games need this sort of system though, so maybe
it's time to upgrade.

Simon.

Yep...you're right, it's $14.99 here....but I don't want to buy
something that I can't play on my current system. Having it and not be
able to play it would be worse than not having it at all. :-)

The Stealth II S220 is a Rendition card which I heard works well with
GPL (along with ICR2, N2, etc).

Sure upgrading would be the best and ideal solution, but it's not an
option for me at the moment....besides, all the games I currently like
to play at the moment work fine...GP2, ICR2, N2.

I appreciate the reply though.

Tony.

I used to run GPL on a pentium 200 mmx with a stealth 2 s220, no u don't
need the Opengl patch and it will run ok....

However with grfx details turned down quite aways.  I couldn't run
online with gfx at an acceptable level at the tracks with the concrete
tires, like rouen and mexico

I don't know how your ppro will run it, maybe better than my p200,  a V2
SLI rig would probably help u out quite abit.

Give it a shot, your system is due for an upgrade anyways +)

Oops...didn't realize it was a rendtion.  A rendition card is excellent for
GPL.  You will definitely be able to play the game in training mode, but you
will struggle with races.  Even if you can't upgrade, I still think you will
get some fun out of it with your current system.

I think your main problem is with the 4MB card. Even though it's rendition,
I think I remeber reading somewhere that GPL essentially eats 8MB of VRAM
when you fire it up. With only 4 on the card, you're going to loading up the
CPU with physics and graphics and I don't think you'll see the results
you're looking for. Training mode should be ok. Have you tried the demo? It
should give you a fair representation with your rendition.

Haven't tried the demo...yet. I'm downloading it right now and will
give it a try with my system. :-)

Appreciate all the feedback guys.

Well, since you asked an opinion - get a stronger machine first.  You'll
probably have to turn off too much detail to be able to race against anyone -
AI or VROC...

Yep...it's way to slow on my current system....however I'll pass on
GPL and keep my machine...I honestly can't see buying a new machine
just to play a game! My current system performs very well for my needs
and the games that I play now.

Come on now Tony...join the gang! Treat yourself to this harmless little
$15 racing game, then proceed to spend $1000 dollars upgrading your
computer so you can shave a couple of seconds off your PB at Monza. Give
it a go and you'll be hooked! Besides, the money you save by not going
out and having a life should easily pay for a new computer.

Yeah, it beats the hell out of spending $10,000 to $10,000,000+ a year
to race for real, and it is safer! Where else can you race cars from
1967 against the best there was for ~$20 (not including the $2000 for
the new computer!) :-)
