going to be generally confined to the first 4 or 5 laps.
We went a few laps before the first caution, and I was running in 4th
behind Brian Oster. On the restart, Pete Reston (running 2nd at the
time) lost his gearbox and slowed somewhat dramatically as we
approached turn 1. Brian made it around him okay just at the entrance
to turn 1, and I was trying to figure out why he was able to pass
Pete so easily. It quickly became evident that Pete was having a
problem, and I we approached turn 2, I moved to go high around him
while slowing a bit.
At precisely that point, Pete moved high a little, and I slowed to
keep from hitting him. Neil Charlton was behind me and couldn't see
what was happening, and rear ended me, pushing me into the outside
wall. This turned me sideways on the track, and the 103 car t-boned
me, followed immediately by a strike from Mitch Alatorre.
The hit by Mitch was the death blow, flipping me down the track.
While I was able to motor back to the pits, I had to retire because
the crew couldn't fix the car.
I guess I don't have to tell you how much it sucks to be eliminated
by events not of your own making. It was soundly "one of them
racin' deals", and nobody involved should feel like they could have
done anything differently.
In any case, I re-connected to the race while it still had about 35
laps to go, and the last 10 laps or so was a great contest between
Ginger Fletcher trying to pass the eventual winner, Brian Oster.
