RASCAR: Darlington - Ugh

This is gonna be a tough race (147 laps).  I suggest that everyone wear
asbestos skivvies.

My best time so far (after about 50 offline laps) is 31.605.

Exit from turns is gonna see a lot of people get loose and bang inside
wall.

Turns are pretty much too narrow to allow passing in an online race if
the connection for either car is iffy.

I've got a BLAP of 29.874  I think that was with either JP's or Bob
Stanley's qual setup. The race setup can do 29's but mostly 30.1's

In RASCAR, we use the default <fast> setup.

We're running the default <fast> setup, so those times probably won't be
possible.

I can do low 30's with the fast setup, but there's no way I'd try that
in a race.  In a fixed setup Darlington race, you'll do fine if you
just relax and drive smooth laps.  I wouldn't even bother racing until
the last 10 laps.

John,

The best I could do was about 30.6xx (only twice so far) after getting the
tires warmed up... maybe 7 laps or so.  This was after about 60 - 70 laps of
getting used to the car & track (haven't even *tried* Darlington since the TEN
days).

Biggest gain I found was going into turn 1. You have to really "diamond" 1 &
2.   I tried it DW's way & only did about 31.2xx. What worked for me was to go
into 1 much harder than you think is possible, back off about 1/2 way, just
like DW says (no more than that, or the car gets REAL loose), but then get
right back into it, drift to the wall under full (or almost full) throttle
'til you get to the red "Darlington" on the wall between 1 & 2, then off
throttle about 1/2 way again, & right back into it all the way to turn 3.  You
may have to blip the throttle again, at or near the apex of turn 2, & drive as
close to the apron line as you comfortably can without hitting it, cause
hitting the apron here will get you a new "Darlington stripe", at best.  ;o/

Keeping in the throttle (at least *some* throttle, except when going into turn
3) actually made the setup feel much more stable.  Hard to believe the same
person that made this setup made the other "fast" setups.  Tho Texas was
somewhat similiar (I think ?) .

HTH,

-Brian

I say let's skip this track.

The racing won't be good. There will be accidents and yellows. Bristol
didn't go so well, and we don't need another disappointing race following
that one.

Screw the "real schedule". Let's take a lesson from LFS. Let's pick a track
where we can have great racing AND some fun.

All you have to do is hang back and wait for the person in front of
you to overdrive the entry and then get stuck on the wall.  Stay off
the fly paper and you will do fine here.

Unless of course, somebody who just got off the fly paper darts in
front of you in the middle of turn 4.

Which is why I have a love hate thing with this track.  If you really
get to do some racing, it is a blast.  You really have to work for
each position.  But the wall riding "fix" totally blows.

To get the full Labor Day effect, be sure to have a couple of kerosene
space heaters in the room with you.  It gets so damn hot there in
Sept... I don't think you could actually *burn* it down (as suggested
by Larry in another thread); it would just laugh at you.

Hehe...  That was my plan for Bristol.  I would have been quite content to hold
station until near the end.  200 lap race, and guys are trying to win in the
first 100... :-(

I think the Texas setup is pretty darned good.

The Bristol setup isn't terrible, but it needs one notch more tape, a few
notches less front spring, a softer rr spring, a little more compression in
the rear shocks, and one notch higher gear ratio and...

Ah, shit.  I guess Bristol sucks too :)

Why don't you guys try some of the converted tracks?  Just an idea...
I'd think that Monza would be a blast with 30-40 cars.

Hell Wot You Say? doesn't driving the track backwards as someone <I won't
mention names> posted here, is the ticket to learning the tracks?  :-)

I would have to disagree on your point Eldred.  Just cause a guy is making a
pass early doesnt at all mean he's trying to win on that particular lap.
Rather, he's putting himself in position for a win at the end of the race.
Ya get down to the last 20 laps and if you arent near the front you arent
going to have any chance of a victory.  Patience still plays a major role,
if ya wreck it's all over, but ya still need to be in contact with the
front-runners.   Am I incorrect on this?

Nah, you're right.  If an easy opportunity presented itself, I would take it.
If not, I wouldn't force the issue.  Meaning *I* don't want to cause a wreck so
early in the race.  Especially since someone else will probably wreck, and let
the field close up again.
Now in the last 20-30 laps... :-)
