Diamond VooDoo II 12 meg delayed

by i.. » Wed, 22 Apr 1998 04:00:00

Just got off the phone with Electronics Boutique, where I have a
Diamond VooDoo II 12 meg pre-ordered. Word is that shipment has been
delayed until a "projected" May 15th release date.. Doesn't really bug
me as I have a Monster I now, but what could they be doing considering
the fact that Creative released their 12 meg card a month ago? Maybe
working out the game bundle? But that wouldn't delay the OEM card...
Any ideas?

Yes.....save your money by buying the 8Mb card.

You will see no benefit at all with the 12mb unit.  If you want to verify
this, go to http://www.tomshardware.com and look at the tests of the
Voodoo2 cards.

Well, go to http://www.ve3d.net and you will see tests with Quake2 that
clearly show an advantage for the extra texture memory.

From what I've read there aren't really any games out at the present
that utilize the extra texture memory directly.  However, I wonder if
Papyrus may find a use for this with the Nuburing track!

Actually, the Diamond Voodoo 2 12 Meg board will ship with titles that
specifically take advantage of the extra texture memory.  So I am going to
spend the extra 50 bux so I have the extra memory, since it doesn';t look
too difficult for developers to take advantage of it.

Todd

...using current sims and games! This autumn I plan on still using my
soon to be
purchased V2 card (what a sentence!), and there will be software using
high-
quality textures (quake3, flight sims). As you cannot upgrade the 8MB
V2, it
would be silly to buy it and be sorry later (just to save $60?).

Though I knew the 12 meg cards would be used by games soon enough, I
have chosen to be happy with the 8 meg V II for now and just get another
and go SLI when necessary. That should take care of the graphics dept of
my PC for a while :)

Just to shed a little light on 8 meg vs 12 meg. . .  SLI'ing two 8meg
cards will not give you the extra texture memory that is available on a
12meg board.  It will however allow "interlacing" and provide higher
resolutions.  However, the program (if it uses extra textures) will have
to offload the textures from your system memory and will cause what is
known as memory thrashing.  This is not to say that making the 8meg
choice over the 12meg choice is wrong, just want to make sure that
people understand the difference.

Of course, in order to do this I shall have to sell my 7 children for
scientific experiments but....c'est la vie!
