Finally got below 1:10 in GPL!!!

by Ron Ginte » Sat, 18 Jul 1998 04:00:00

I just tonight cracked the 1:10 barrier in GPL with consecutive laps
of 9.89 and 9.95, and I had to tell someone about it!  I've only been
at the demo for 3 weeks, since getting a new machine equipped with a
3dfx card, and this is easily the most computer-based fun I've ever
had.

After languishing in the 1:11 range for the past week, I finally
figured out two important things.  I can enter a corner a little
faster than before, because I used to let off the throttle, and that
would cause oversteer.  Now I know that I can stop the spin by
applying throttle, and with the right balance, can scrub off excess
speed in the corner with a controlled slide.  Secondly, at turn 5
(?)(it's the second sharp right-hander, not counting turn 1), if I hug
the guard rail on the inside of the shallow left approaching the turn,
then I don't get oversteer on trailing throttle, allowing me to keep
the power on a little longer, and brake immediately.  Previously, I
was drifting out a little in the left-hander, and when I'd get off the
throttle, I'd have to catch a little oversteer slide before applying
the brakes for the right-hander.

Is this the greatest sim, or what?<g>  When we actually get to race
other cars, it's gonna be too much for words!  Previous members of
Zubenelgenubi Racing are being asked to report to the track for
pre-season testing and practice immediately.

Well done! Great to break the 1:10 barrier isn't it? (I've only ever
broken it twice a 1:09:98 & a 1:09:95 but it still feels great).

Watch replays from the *really* fast guys and you can see where you
are losing time, it doesn't make it any easier to go faster though!
