NASCAR Caution Line Bug?

by David Spar » Wed, 08 Nov 1995 04:00:00

I think I found a bug in the NASCAR's caution line logic. I was leading at
Martinsville when the yellog flag came out. I raced back to the line,
attempting to put another car a lap down, but just missed beating it to the
line. After crossing the line, I passed it when it jammed on the brakes and
I got the message, "Stay behind car #xx". I dropped back behind it, but it
lined up behind the pace car instead of passing the pace car to fall in at
the end of the caution line.

This also occurred to me at N. Wilkesboro only in reverse. I was the last
car on the lead lap and was passed by the leader just after passing the
line. I got stuck behind the pace car just in front of the leader. It seems
like there's a hole in the logic where if a pass occurs after crossing the
line but before lining up behind the pace car, the program gets confused
about who should fall in behind the pace car.
