Kyro II vs Geforce2 MX ??

by Rob » Sat, 28 Jul 2001 15:27:43

Does anyone know how the Kyro II and Geforce2 MX compare? Would one card
be better than the other for a low power (450mhz) PC? Is anyone playing N4
or GPL with a Kyro II card?
I would be very appreciative of any info concerning the Kyro II chip. TIA.
Do N4 and GPL use 16 bit colour or 32 bit colour? I think the Kyro II chip
performs well in 32 bit colour.

That's a good and relevant question. Both cards have their own
advantages. Kyro II has a very good algorithm for not drawing stuff it
doesn't need to, which relieves the memory bandwith issues, something
that the MX II cards suffer from at high resolutions/32 bit colors. On
the other hand, the GeForce has a T&L unit that can bring up to 40%
speed increase in Nascar 4 when turned on, especially if world detail is
increased. Another issue is the drivers which are far more mature for
the GeForce, although I don't think Kyro II has too many issues.

Therefore it is very difficult to say which one is better; both are more
than sufficient for GPL (it uses 16 bit, no T&L), and in Nascar 4 (that
can run in both 16 and 32 bit) both have their own advantages. It would
be really great so see some head to head comparisons, esp. on processor
power limited machines where the T&L of the GeForce comes into play
more.

Have a look at the "Kyro II with GPL & Vroc" article at

The Geforce 2MX has a T&L gpu so it takes over some work from your slow cpu.
So that would be the best choice imho.

The Kyro II card is a much superior card to an MX-type GeForce.  It's closer
to a GTS then a MX in terms of power.  Any current video cards will be much
better with a higher processor then just a 450mhz (I know my P3-500 really
needs to be changed to a P3-1000 to get full power off my Kyro II).

About every single game on the market has 32 bit colour.  The Kyro II does
32 bit colour without a single FPS drop, so it's really a great card for N4.
Especially if you had an older card that couldn't handle textures bigger
then 2562.  For GPL there are some little issues that still don't detract
from racing it.  I really suggest it for it's quality/price ratio.

They are in the same price range as the mx cards. And they are faster. Yes
they do suck compared to a geforce 3. Everything sucks compared to a gf3.

More importantly, how are the drivers? Doesn't matter how fast a card
is if it has crappy drivers. I've heard there are problems with the
KyroII drivers, but I don't have one so don't really know.

"Oh ye of little faith!"

I am working on my Kyro II tweaks with the latest Vivid!XS drivers (7.114)
and unless I'm mistaken I have solved *all* the issues bar one. So please
wait a day or two for optimized settings to emerge from Denmark. :-) [Needs
a bit more testing online - and on someone else's hardware too.]

Kyro II looks to be pretty nice check this review out. Myself I'm sticking
with my V5 card for now, but if I where looking for another card I think I
would take a hard look at this card.

Using 12.90 here with no problems that I have noticed. Anyway, Nvidia
drivers are *unified* so all those drivers are for *many* various
video cards, not just one.

Does that apply to all games or just GPL?

That applies to all games on which I spend more than 30 mins a week.
So the complete list is:
 - GPL

However, there are quite a few tweaks/optimized settings available on the
net, and bundled with the drivers.

I'm using A.P. Charlesworth's excellent "Kyro Tools XP - Version 1.0.2.86 "
for tweaking. So many options, so little time.

I'll say "good", which is already at least on-par with most of the video
card drivers on the net.  And considering it's a very new chipset, the
future is quite bright I say.
