N2002-What's wrong with me?!? I S*CK !

by Trick Dac » Mon, 18 Nov 2002 07:19:37

Hi all,

I'm fond of racing simulators..
I'm pretty good at GPL & F12002

I bought Nascar 2002 aswell but I only like the road courses, so I bought
the convertor yesterday and took off...

At Sears I can only do occasional 1:24's
At the Osterreicring I can do only 1:52's
At my favorite GPL circuit Zandvoort I could only do 1:32's

What is wrong with me ?!?

I always use the fast (default)-setups but even after a whole day of racing
N2002 my times don't get any better...

Do I have to look for another way to spend my time ?
Am I not talented ?
Do I need to download some freeware tetris-games ?

Hmmm, where to start.......stock cars weigh almost three times as much as an
F-1 car, the driving style needed to get these things around the track is
more "keep the momentum you've got" and "Keep it on the track" than "point
and shoot", which seems to be how GP cars are driven. I think with a few
more days (and laps) of driving, you'll come to appreciate the driving model
of N2002.
As far as the converted tracks, I am not particularly fast at those places
yet, so I can't offer much advice, but if you wish to try the ovals (and you
should.......they're stock cars) I find Bob Stanley's setups closest to my
liking, I tweak them slightly to fit my driving "style".....ya, that's it,
my style.
Get them here http://www.sportplanet.com/team-lightspeed/ click on the setup
exchange button, and by all means, if you enjoyed GPL style online racing,
you should definitely try N2002 online.....after you've practiced a bit.

I find the fast setups have way too much understeer.  Try softening
the front springs (a lot).

Take a look at your replays with the helicopter.  Are you using _all_
the track?

Trail braking is a must.  Also, you can get on the gas a lot harder
and sooner than in a car with a better power/weight ratio.

Thanx for the info Ed !

I will try the setups you suggested.
As for the ovals : I've tried them but I'm not quite fond of them, mainly
because I'm not good at it (except for the superspeedways - which are pretty
easy to drive & even win (offline, that is <G>))

I will practice the roads like crazy... and maybe one day... I'll get better
<G>

Thanx Ed...

Btw : what's your PB at Sears & at Wats atm ?

Greetz,

Trick

Hi Bob !

Softening the springs you say ? I'm gonna try that. By how much
approximately ? What works for you ?
As for the helicopter view : yes, i'm using all of the track...
I learned that in GPL... <G>

And i don't have the feeling I can get on the gas sooner... it seems the
other way 'round...

Thanx for the help, Bob

The fast setups with the converted tracks aren't very good, and
honestly I don't think Dave N spent a greal deal of time working on
them - I'm sure cracking the file format, improving the texture
quality, modifying the racing surfaces, creating AI, etc was more than
enough work for one man. =)

Grab the setups and replays by Achim Trensz if you really want a
driving guide and good baseline setups for the new roadies.  I'm not
nearly as quick as he is, but I've knocked 2-4 seconds off at the Glen
and Sears just by watching his lines, and there's no way you can drive
half the converted tracks with the gearings in the fast setups.

If Dave made them himself, there are good reasons for that :-)

=)  Honestly it doesn't seem like he really did anything but throw a
few setups from another track into each directory or something.  Most
of the setups with the converted tracks ride the rev limiter half the
way around the track.

Could well be, to the best of my knowledge David doesn't even race N2002
or N4, he's probably just cruising around the tracks looking for bug in
the gfx :-)

So we do as we always do in cases like this, blame the beta testors

200-500lbs on the front.  Depends on the track.

I soften until they bottom out, then adjust other stuff to try to get more
room to soften them even more :)

Once I exceed the envelope, I back it off one notch.

If I then hear any scrape whatsoever I back off one more notch.
