Thanks "Brian".... : )

I feel like such a ***. Actually, though, I've only been using PCs for a
short while... I can troubleshoot the heck out of Macs, though...

% I can't seem to find either the "autostart" folder *or* "fast find"...

% BTW, I don't have Microsoft Office (at least I don't think I do) but I do have
% Microsoft Works, which came with the computer.

% Any suggestions?

% thx

Some versions of Fast Find are controlled via the Control Panel

So look for a Fast Find there, if there is one delete all indexes and I
think that will shut it down.

If your running Windows 98, try clicking on start / run  and type msconfig.
Click on the Startup tab, and you should have all the programs running with
a check box next to them.  You can uncheck any programs that you find are
robbing valuable resources.  The nice thing about this is that your only
disabling them, not deleting them.  You could always come back and re-enable
them if needed.

Andrew

there should be a C:\WINDOWS\Start Menu\Programs\StartUp directory.....check
there is no Fast Find

It could be your power management perhaps.....make sure it doesnt try to
turn off the hard disk for you (as it thinks there is no keyboard / mouse
activity)

Hope this helps

Also try adding the following line to your system.ini under [386Enh]

ConservativeSwapfileUsage=1

Seems to help stop those random HD access moments where the game freezes for
a split second which always seems to happen as you're right in the middle of
a tricky 'moment'

| Try increasing the size of your swap file in windows.  I had the same
| problem and wrecked out of many online races because the screen would stop
| moving when the HD came on.. The swap file size increase fixed it.

Seems to, or it does? According to a  MSCSE doing the above is more
detrimental than good.

Something that I have noticed that causes problems is "Real Player"  I'm not
sure how it happened but on several occasions it has forced it's self into the
system tray.  I have had to use "MSCONFIG" more than once to disable it.  Every
time it gets in there it causes the system to slow drastically then almost
completely lock up.
